Dragmaster, the acclaimed drag racing team originating in 1954, was established when Dode Martin and Jim Nelson partnered with the shared goal of constructing dragsters and race cars for the swiftly growing sport. Dragmaster offered anything a car fanatic could dream, from kits to turnkey cars, as well as their revered Streetster. Inspired by the T roadster, the pair introduced the Streetster, a T-bucket tube-frame chassis kit, an item that propelled the Dragster name to stardom. The single-engine Dragmaster chassis became their signature as the car claimed victory in the NHRA Nationals in both 1957 and 1958, resulting in a high demand for the Dragmaster cars. Roland Leong began racing thanks to Dragmaster. After Top Fuel dragsters were allowed to race in NHRA races in 1965, the pair ceased construction of Dragmaster dragster chassis and began transitioning into an automotive repair shop. Although Dragmaster was sold in 1995, the legendary Dragmaster cars live on in the spirit of drag racing and racers.

Rick Griffin was a highly gifted cartoonist and artist born in Palos Verdes, California in 1944.  Griffin was surfing by age 12 and developing his artistic skills by copying the cartoons in Mad magazine.  At the age of sixteen, Griffin met John Severson, who had just recently released the first issue of Surfer Magazine.  Severson saw the potential in Griffin's work and agreed to put Griffin's cartoon strip, "The Gremmies" in the next issue.  That cartoon was followed by a mop-haired, wide-grinned character called Murphy.  The beloved Murphy series ran in every issue of Surfer until late 1964, becoming somewhat of an unofficial mascot of the global surfing community.  Beyond cartooning, Rick Griffin is also known as one of the psychedelia art movement's pioneers, with some of his best known work coming on album covers such as The Grateful Dead (Aoxomoxoa), The Eagles (On the Border), Jackson Browne (Late for the Sky), and a popular album cover featuring a surfing eyeball on the Chris Darrow & Max Buda album (Eye of the Storm).  In several pieces of his work for The Grateful Dead, the surf themes from Griffin's youth can be seen merging with his counter culture art in the form of surfing skeletons and psychedelic waves.

From 1915 to 1921, Hawaiian counties issued license plates yearly until 1922, in which a multitude of counties in the Territory of Hawaii unified to discuss the distribution of license plates. Throughout their history, Hawaiian license plates have gone through a variety of alterations and materials, ranging from wood to porcelain to steel-embossed with swordfish, automobile, and surfer-shaped expiration tags. Hawaiian license plates manufactured in 1976 were the first to display print on retro-reflective foil. The first graphic to be featured on Hawaiian license plates was the territory’s name, stamped on the license plate in a South Pacific font. After Hawaii became an official state in 1959, the slogan became “Aloha State.” The tv-show Hawaii Five-O popularized Hawaiian license plates beginning in 1968 and, continued the trend through 1988 with the tv-show Magnum P.I. displaying the Aloha State warrior license plate on a red Ferrari 308 GTS featuring the number ROBIN 1. Although vintage Hawaiian license plates have reached high demand in recent years, they are difficult to procure as steel license plates have been destroyed by the salt from the ocean.

Opened in 1962, Hawaii Raceway Park thrilled the residents and visitors of Ewa Beach and the surrounding areas with world class racing events for 42 years. The 66-acre Raceway Park played host to both professional and amateur racing of funny cars, stock cars, dragsters, and motocross and more until its eventual shutdown in 2006. Over its active years, the park included a ¼ mile racing track, drag strip, as well as a motocross and BMX venue.

Hanauma Bay is not only one of the most popular tourist destinations on Oahu but also functions to preserve the natural beauty unique to Hawaii. In 1967, Hanauma Bay was claimed by the State Division of Fish and Game as a Marine Protected Area, meaning everything from marine organisms to sand, was protected. As with many early air carriers, Western Airlines began in 1925 as a mail carrier service. Based in California, Western went through many stages over its sixty plus year existence. When it began serving as a commercial airline it initially focused on the Western United States. In 1969 it began offering service to Honolulu and Hilo with high end service which they called The Islander routes. During its prime in the 1970's and 1980's Western increased it's service to Hawaii and also offered flights to Kahului and Kona. In 1986 Western entered into a merger with Delta Airlines, and the Western Airlines name was retired.

Founded in 1961 by Gordon "Grubby" Clark in Laguna Niguel, California, Clark Foam revolutionized the surfing industry by producing polyurethane foam blanks. These blanks provided a basic surfboard construction for shapers to refine into their own individual models, and the blanks themselves were actually designed for Clark by such legendary shapers as Dale Velzy and Dick Brewer. At one point before closing in 2005, it is estimated that Clark supplied about 90% of all surfboard blanks in the entire world.

The Strong Current Surf Shop has been a staple on the North Shore since 1989.  The shop was founded by the husband-and-wife team of Johnny and Bonnie Moore, who left New Jersey for a slice of Hawaiian heaven.  Originally the shop sold surfboards, surfboard accessories and apparel, but it quickly became evident that their apparel, which they were screen printing upstairs from their shop, was the big draw.  In 1993 the shop also became the home for the Hale'iwa Surf Museum.  A surf museum in an apparel store, what a crazy idea, right?

Originally established in 1968 and founded by shaper Dave Garner, Plastic Fantastic Surfboards began a history that would span five decades, over half a dozen owners, and factories in 3 states. The name Plastic Fantastic  was inspired by the Jefferson Airplane song “Plastic Fantastic Lover.”  The original home for Plastic Fantastic was in Haleiwa, Hawaii from 1968 to 1970, followed by two more years of production at a different location on the North Shore.  At the same time, Garner and Danny Calohan would open shop in Huntington Beach, California, and the company would employ a stable of gifted shapers through the years, including Skip Frye, Jock Sutherland, Robert August, Bruce Jones, and Barry Kanaiaupuni.  From 1968 to 2003 it is estimated that Plastic Fantastic produced approximately 55,000 surfboards.

Believe it or not, Hawaii does, indeed, have an interstate highway. Now, you ask, how can an island have an interstate highway? Well, U.S. law states that federal highway funds can be used as long as the proposed highway connects military bases. Oahu’s Honolulu Highway, known to locals as  “H1,” connects Pearl Harbor with Diamond Head, which used to be home to Fort Ruger. The first portions of the H1 opened in 1953, and over a half century later, H1 still enables locals and visitors alike to explore the beautiful island of Oahu.
