In 1879 Hawaiian ukulele design and production was changed forever with the emigration of Manuel Nunes from Madeira to Hawaii, for he became known as the “Inventor of the Original Ukulele,” as listed in the 1916 city directory. Upon arrival, although the Portugese Consul General in Hawaii recorded Nunes as a laborer due to a few years of plantation work, in 1889, Nunes became listed as a guitar maker, beginning his mission to popularize the instrument known as the ukulele. In 1910, Manuel Nunes established M. Nunes and Sons with Leonardo and Julius Nunes, who eventually used the skills they inherited in their apprenticeship to start their own ukulele manufacturing businesses. Nunes constructed a ukulele empire that stayed in business for more than 40 years, manufacturing handmade instruments with the label “M. Nunes, Inventor of the Ukulele and Taro Patch Fiddles in Honolulu in 1879.” While Julius returned to work at the company with his father, Leonardo moved to Los Angeles, introducing the Hawaiian ukulele to new mainland customers. In 1922, Manuel Nunes died at the age of 79, leaving behind an enduring mark on Hawaiian culture with the soulful, resonant music strummed on the Hawaiian ukulele.

Montague Rod Company became the biggest producer of split bamboo rods when it bought out the Chubb Rod Company in 1900. Based out of Montague City, Massachusetts, the company produced everything a fisherman could dream of from spinning, trolling, casting, ocean rods, and fly rods. Montague acquired a large customer base as fisherman passed up on the fancy and sought out the durable, thus drawn to Montague’s reputation of built and priced for the everyday fisherman. Over the years, Montague built more than 300 different fly rod models. Introduced in the late 1920’s, Red Wing was known as the higher end models of Montague. Rapidan was commonly agreed to be the mid level and Sunbeam the most common lower level. Though the company experienced booming success over the years, Montague was forced to close in 1955 after a trade embargo was placed on Chinese goods, causing a shortage of quality bamboo. The legend of Montague continues in the fishing world as companies draw on the magnitude of innovative designs.

Roland "The Hawaiian" Leong is one of the legendary figures in racing, whose over 40-year career as a driver, owner and crew chief for funny cars and dragsters has made him one of the sport's greats. In the mid 1950's Malibu was at the center of the surfing universe and a variety of surfboard manufacturers were popping up to fill the demand for quality surfboards.   Tom Flaherty was running a sailing and diving shop in Malibu at this time, and plunged into the fast growing market with boards he was personally shaping and glassing.  His craftsmanship quickly gained a following and Flaherty began employing guest shapers and glassers including names like Donald Takayama and Wayne Miyata.  The Flaherty continued to flourish in over the following decade with shops opening in Venice, Hollywood, the San Fernando Valley, and Waikiki Beach in Hawaii.  Flaherty was popular amongst serious surfers due to  his focus on designs that enhanced performance and also venturing in the use of new materials.  Flaherty was one of the first manufacturers to incorporate foam, allowing his boards to lose weight and gain maneuverability and speed.  Tom was also well known for producing some of the finest big wave guns of the era, capable of challenging the North Shore's most fierce waves.

Known as "The Hawk", Dale is a surfer, a celebrity, a hell raising rebel, a revolutionary retailer, a hall of fame surfer, a surf film financier, a lifeguard, and most of all, a shaper. A master shaper in his own right, Joe Quigg said, "You couldn't even sell a board in the sixties unless it looked like a Velzy board." Dale opened Velzy Surfboards (the world's first surf shop) in Manhattan Beach in 1949, and within years had shops all along Southern California's coast, and in Hawaii. Dale was so influential that a stretch of Hawaii's famous North Shore - now known as Velzyland - was named in his honor. In his 50 plus years of building boards for the best surfers the sport has ever known, Dale designed dozens of surfboards, each revolutionizing surfing in its own way.

Sundays in Western New York during the 1960's and early 70's were reserved for a day at the races. Originally known as Niagara Falls Airport Drag Strip, the track opened its gates in 1961 and quickly became one of drag racing’s hottest venues. Niagara Drag Strip hosted the New York State Championship Drag meet. 4500 plus avid drag racing fans flocked to the venue to cheer more than 224 races. Every season attracted legendary names to the bigger shows as Niagara Falls’s Deuces Wild car club became Niagara’s track crew and young drag racing pros began competing at the track. On July 10, 1964, Niagara Drag Strip was officially sanctioned for approval by the NHRA. Niagara Drag Strip hosted the legendary 1967 NASCAR Summer Nationals attracting racing fans from all over the country. Although Niagara Drag Strip closed its gates in 1974 due to complaints of raucous noise, the legendary drag strip lives on in the heart of racing as fans commemorate the monumental victories of the track.

In 1927, Joseph Martin created what would become one of America’s most renowned fishing lures. Martin Fish Lure, based in Seattle, Washington, produced a wide variety of lures, such as fly rod poppers, pikes, and injured minnows. Martin Fish Lure was revered for its salmon plugs and quickly became the country’s largest producer. The company primarily focused on saltwater models, like the Model 77, Jetty Model, and the Atom look-alike. The Martin Injured Minnow Lure was manufactured in the 1930's and the company prospered from the successful lures like the Creek Chub Injured Minnow and the Heddon SOS constructed from wood. Although Joseph passed away in 1943, Martin Fish Lure continued to prosper into the 1980's. To this day, the most antique Martin Lures have a frog spot stenciled in red on the belly of the lure. So next time you are casting out, take a moment, flip over your lure and see if the signatory red mark reveals you are reeling in a big catch with one of America’s favorites.

Street racing burned rubber through Los Angeles, California during the 1950s drawing fans of all ages with raucous noise and adrenaline thrills to this all-American sport. Opening its gates in October 1955, Lions Drag Strip welcomed 15,000 people to witness cars race in the Wilmington district of sunny L.A. The Lions Club International sponsored the beloved track, hosting a variety of races licensed by the American Hot Rod Association. After consistently holding races every Sunday for the next two years, Mickey Thompson, the strip manager, proposed Saturday night racing, leading to a rapid escalation of young fans in attendance. The drag strip thrived until 1972 when it was torn down to allow space for shipping cargo containers overseas. The memory of Lions Drag Strip cruises on today being honored through pop culture with comedians paying tribute to announcer Larry Huffman’s wired announcing style, in television series like The Munsters and MadMen , and Brad Pitt’s character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wearing a Lions Drag Strip t-shirt.
