Makaha Skateboards was founded in 1963 by a Venice Beach, California lifeguard named Larry Stevenson. Larry was sitting in his lifeguard tower when he first noticed kids skateboarding on homemade boards in the parking lots that lined the beach. He decided to manufacture a quality skateboard and tie it to the best surf spot in Hawaii - Makaha Beach. Larry was also publisher of SurfGuide magazine, which ran the first skateboard ads, cartoons, and articles about the Makaha Team. Hanauma Bay is not only one of the most popular tourist destinations on Oahu but also functions to preserve the natural beauty unique to Hawaii. Shaved ice has been a Hawaiian tradition ever since the plantation days. Hot, exhausted workers would shave a block of ice with a hand saw and flavor it with juice, which is basically the same way it's done today!
