Originally established in 1968 and founded by shaper Dave Garner, Plastic Fantastic Surfboards began a history that would span five decades, over half a dozen owners, and factories in 3 states. The name Plastic Fantastic  was inspired by the Jefferson Airplane song “Plastic Fantastic Lover.”  The original home for Plastic Fantastic was in Haleiwa, Hawaii from 1968 to 1970, followed by two more years of production at a different location on the North Shore.  At the same time, Garner and Danny Calohan would open shop in Huntington Beach, California, and the company would employ a stable of gifted shapers through the years, including Skip Frye, Jock Sutherland, Robert August, Bruce Jones, and Barry Kanaiaupuni.  From 1968 to 2003 it is estimated that Plastic Fantastic produced approximately 55,000 surfboards.

A kaleidoscope snorkeling experience is located in the ancient volcanic cinder cone about 3 miles off Maui’s south shore- Molokini. This islet and the surrounding 77 underwater acres were announced a Marine Life Conservation District in 1977, thus protected by the federal government. Molokini’s unique shape was created during World War II when the United States Navy used Molokini for target practice. Today, the exquisite islet offers a wide variety of corals and marine organisms inhabiting its sea life sanctuary.

Opened in 1962, Hawaii Raceway Park thrilled the residents and visitors of Ewa Beach and the surrounding areas with world class racing events for 42 years. The 66-acre Raceway Park played host to both professional and amateur racing of funny cars, stock cars, dragsters, and motocross and more until its eventual shutdown in 2006. As with many early air carriers, Western Airlines began in 1925 as a mail carrier service.  Based in California, Western went through many stages over its sixty plus year existence.  When it began serving as a commercial airline it initially focused on the Western United States.  In 1969 it began offering service to Honolulu and Hilo with high end service which they called The Islander routes.  During its prime in the 1970's and 1980's Western increased it's service to Hawaii and also offered flights to Kahului and Kona.  In 1986 Western entered into a merger with Delta Airlines, and the Western Airlines name was retired.

The Hawaiian Masters was conceived and developed by Fred Hemmings three years after he won the 1968 World Surfing Championships. Held annually in December, the competition is home to one of the world's most explosive tubes breaking just 75 yards off the shore, allowing judges and spectators alike to have a great view. With a higher emphasis on tuberiding than other events, the competition became known as Pipeline Masters and has long been regarded as the world's top surfing contest. Hawaiian pro surfer Jeff Hackman won the first event in 1971, along with the $500 purse, and Pipeline legend Gerry Lopez won the next two years.

Makaha Skateboards was founded in 1963 by a Venice Beach, California lifeguard named Larry Stevenson. Larry was sitting in his lifeguard tower when he first noticed kids skateboarding on homemade boards in the parking lots that lined the beach. He decided to manufacture a quality skateboard and tie it to the best surf spot in Hawaii - Makaha Beach. Larry was also publisher of SurfGuide magazine, which ran the first skateboard ads, cartoons, and articles about the Makaha Team. The combination of the quality Makaha boards along with Larry’s promotion created skateboarding’s first wave, including appearances on the Steve Allen Show and the Art Linkletter Show.

Believe it or not, Hawaii does, indeed, have an interstate highway. Now, you ask, how can an island have an interstate highway? Well, U.S. law states that federal highway funds can be used as long as the proposed highway connects military bases. Oahu’s Honolulu Highway, known to locals as “H1,” connects Pearl Harbor with Diamond Head, which used to be home to Fort Ruger. The first portions of the H1 opened in 1953, and over a half century later, H1 still enables locals and visitors alike to explore the beautiful island of Oahu. Known as "The Hawk", Dale is a surfer, a celebrity, a hell raising rebel, a revolutionary retailer, a hall of fame surfer, a surf film financier, a lifeguard, and most of all, a shaper. A master shaper in his own right, Joe Quigg said, "You couldn't even sell a board in the sixties unless it looked like a Velzy board." Dale opened Velzy Surfboards (the world's first surf shop) in Manhattan Beach in 1949, and within years had shops all along Southern California's coast, and in Hawaii. Dale was so influential that a stretch of Hawaii's famous North Shore - now known as Velzyland - was named in his honor. In his 50 plus years of building boards for the best surfers the sport has ever known, Dale designed dozens of surfboards, each revolutionizing surfing in its own way.

Edward Fletcher and Co. began manufacturing men’s and boy's wear in Australia in 1939 and continued to be a common apparel brand for many decades.  In 1972, the company saw an opportunity in the market to introduce a low cost, but well styled short which they called Stubbies.  That same year, Stubbies went on to sell over 750,000 pairs, and by 1978 these shorts were so successful that the company officially changed its name to Stubbies Clothing Co.  In the late 1970’s and into the 1980’s Stubbies sponsored a series of trial events in California, Hawaii and Florida to help contestants to qualify for the Stubbies Surf Classic.  If you’re wondering about the name, legend says they were trying to come up with a name for the shorts and a tired salesmen got up and said, “This is thirsty work, I’m going out for a stubbie [of beer].”  The name stuck.
