In 1959, the Hawaiian Islands, offering everything from awe-inspiring volcanoes to soothing seas, was officially declared America’s 50th state. Renowned for its soft ivory sands and warm relaxing waters that call to people throughout the world, Hawaii beckoned travelers to come experience and enjoy the unique Hawaiian culture the Islands continue to take pride in today. Surf culture resonates throughout Hawaii. Hawaii’s primary inhabitants, the Polynesians, began the practice of surfing, and the legendary Hawaiian surf culture was born. Surfing was interwoven in all aspects of Hawaiian’s lives from the connection to the sea to the community and love it provided among people. Hawaiians celebrated the ocean during luau with hula dances dedicated to giving thanks to the gifts the sea bestows. During the 1900s, Duke Kahanamoku became a symbol for Hawaii’s surf culture, as he reflected the Spirit of Aloha in his noble and respectful yet kind and welcoming actions. Beginning in the mid-1900s, Hawaiian beaches became the focal point of the Islands. Surf clubs like Waikiki Surf Club began offering lessons to tourists, beach bunnies tanned on the shores, and keiki splashed in the shoreline. To this day, Hawaii’s beaches tell the story of the Hawaiian culture, while continuing to keep the traditional Hawaiian values of community and the Spirit of Aloha alive today.

The three-fingered Shaka greeting widely used today among Hawaiians and others in the surfing community originated from a multitude of stories sharing a common theme: warmth and welcome when greeting another. One story says a man named Hamana Kalili, who worked at the sugar plantation, was involved in an unfortunate accident which severed his three middle fingers. Another legend tells of Tutu Hamana, a great Ali’i (chief) in the court and a man filled with aloha and kindness. When the guest would leave, Tutu Hamana would wave goodbye with his old, bent hand and the people, out of aloha, would wave back just like he did, with their 3 middle fingers down like shaka.

The Strong Current Surf Shop has been a staple on the North Shore since 1989. The shop was founded by the husband-and-wife team of Johnny and Bonnie Moore, who left New Jersey for a slice of Hawaiian heaven. Originally the shop sold surfboards, surfboard accessories and apparel, but it quickly became evident that their apparel, which they screen printed upstairs from their shop, was the big draw. In 1993 the shop also became the home for the Hale'iwa Surf Museum. A surf museum in an apparel store, what a crazy idea, right? ;)

Like many of the early fliers, American Airlines started as a conglomeration of smaller regional airlines whose primary business was delivering US Mail. By 1970 there was a direct flight from New York to Honolulu, offering many mainlanders their first chance to visit the beautiful Aloha State. A few years later in 1973, American became the first major airline to employ a female pilot. Throughout the years American Airlines has been a major innovator in aviation and helped spread Aloha around the globe.

As the name suggests, Hawaii Country Club is in fact the oldest public golf course on the island of Oahu. Opened in 1958, Hawaii Country Club is located in the “Kunia district” among the majestic pineapple fields at the foot of the Waianae Mountain Range. While many new golf courses were built on defunct sugar can plantations, Hawaii Country Club was not. A kaleidoscope snorkeling experience is located in the ancient volcanic cinder cone about 3 miles off Maui’s south shore- Molokini. Founded in the mid 1980s by Frank Hawk, the National Skateboard Association made competition, once again, a priority for skaters. NSA was a proud host to many skate competitions during the 1980s to the 1990s, but as participation began to dwindle, the association was forced to shutdown. Around this time, various famous skaters made their mark in competition through one of the two most common skating styles of the time- freestyle and vert. Rodney Mullen, a freestyle champion, revived and perfected the kickflip, becoming one of the most notorious street skaters in skate history. Tony Hawk, son of Frank Hawk, prevailed in vert skating and became an internationally recognized, professional skater. Gathering at skateparks was a popular pastime among many Hawaiians as riding a skateboard was similar to riding a surfboard. Originating in 1977, Kona Skatepark continues to be the longest remaining private skatepark in the world with activities ranging from lessons to week long skate camps, and includes a snake run, vert ramp, street course, and numerous pools.
