When you think of Hawaii, probably one of the last things you think of is race cars, but perhaps you should think twice about them. Roland "The Hawaiian" Leong is one of the legendary figures in racing, whose over 40 year career as a driver, owner and crew chief for funny cars and dragsters has made him one of the sport's greats. Eleven different drivers accounted for his 23 national event wins. In 2005, he was inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame and in 2006, he was Grand marshal of the 15th Annual Hot Rod Reunion. From 1983-1991, Hawaiian Punch sponsored Leong’s™ Funny Cars, which was one of the longest running sponsorships in drag racing history. Roland Leong wasn't just any Hawaiian, but "The Hawaiian"!

Aloha goes beyond the typical ‘hello’ as it passes on the Aloha Spirit of love and welcoming to those receiving it. Originating during the 18th century, ‘Aloha’ became the most common way to greet someone while simultaneously showing respect and acceptance. The word ‘aloha’ literally translates to “the breath of life,” communicating the idea that aloha is giving and receiving positive energy. The Spirit of Aloha reaches extends beyond the spoken word. It can be seen in the respect and awareness Hawaiian’s have for nature, the importance of tradition and teaching, and the love that reaches beyond their family and friends to strangers new to the Hawaiian Islands. Spend a day in Hawaii and there is a guarantee that you will not only hear ‘Aloha’ but feel it in the warm embrace of Hawaii.

While snow may be the last thing you think of when you think about Hawaii, it does exist. Hawaii actually gets snow on it's three highest Volcano peaks - Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Haleakala. Mauna Kea is the highest point in Hawaii, standing 13,796 feet above sea level and it's name actually means "white mountain" in reference to its peak which is frequently covered in snow during the winter months. Occasionally there is enough snow on the ground for snow skiing. There are no chair lifts or ski lodges, so people will drive to the summit, drop off their skiers, and meet them at the bottom of the run. The first recorded skiers on Mauna Kea were Dudley Lewis and his son in 1936 and skiing Maua Kea has grown in popularity over the years, especially after the summit road was completed in 1964. There are very loose records of impromptu skiing contests being held there as early as 1948 with the popularity and participation of the contests beginning to grow in the 1960's.

The first person to write about Hawaii and surfing was British explorer Captain James Cook in 1778 after seeing Hawaiian wave-riders at the Big Island’s Kealakekua Bay. Cook’s stories of the wonders that he saw and the people that he encountered excited the entire continent of Europe. In many books, such as Polynesian Researches written by William Ellis in 1859, stories of Cook’s travels were brought to life in etchings, a drawing technique in which artists would use strong acid or mordant to cut into metal surfaces to create a design.

Believe it or not, Hawaii does, indeed, have an interstate highway. Now, you ask, how can an island have an interstate highway? Well, U.S. law states that federal highway funds can be used as long as the proposed highway connects military bases. Oahu’s Honolulu Highway, known to locals as “H1,” connects Pearl Harbor with Diamond Head, which used to be home to Fort Ruger. The first portions of the H1 opened in 1953, and over a half century later, H1 still enables locals and visitors alike to explore the beautiful island of Oahu. There are also interstates H2 and H3, which completed in 1997, has arguably some of the most beautiful views of any US highway.
Starting in 1927 with a vision, some single engine aircraft and a few trans-oceanic routes, Pan Am's emphasis on image and branding created the "jet-setter" lifestyle. On April 17, 1935, the S-42 Pioneer Clipper skimmed to the first ever landing in Hawaiian waters after a flight from Alameda, California that lasted 17 hours and 44 minutes. Offering luxury to both domestic and international travelers, Pan Am has left behind a legacy of comfort and sophistication that still resonates today.
