Bruce Brown Films was a film production company created nearly 60 years ago that produced a number of well-recognized lifestyle documentary films produced by director/producer/cinematographer/lecturer, Bruce Brown. The California native began his early film operations in Dana Point, California, where he honed in on his skill sets of surf photography, which later lead to his first film, “Slippery When Wet” (1958). His unique approach to filming the burgeoning world of surf and live-narrated screenings throughout Southern California led to a number of other classics, including “Surf Crazy”, "Surfin’ Shorts”, “Barefoot Adventure”, “Surfing Hollow Days”, and “Waterlogged”. Then, in 1964, Brown would begging touring his latest and ambitious surf flick, “The Endless Summer” in civic centers and schools throughout Los Angeles and Orange Counties. The film has since been regarded as the ultimate surf classic.

Founded in the mid 1980s by Frank Hawk, the National Skateboard Association made competition, once again, a priority for skaters. NSA was a proud host to many skate competitions during the 1980s to the 1990s, but as participation began to dwindle, the association was forced to shutdown. Around this time, various famous skaters made their mark in competition through one of the two most common skating styles of the time- freestyle and vert. Rodney Mullen, a freestyle champion, revived and perfected the kickflip, becoming one of the most notorious street skaters in skate history. Tony Hawk, son of Frank Hawk, prevailed in vert skating and became an internationally recognized, professional skater. Gathering at skateparks was a popular pastime among many Hawaiians as riding a skateboard was similar to riding a surfboard. Originating in 1977, Kona Skatepark continues to be the longest remaining private skatepark in the world with activities ranging from lessons to week long skate camps, and includes a snake run, vert ramp, street course, and numerous pools.

The Kona Inn was built by the Inter-Island Steamship Navigation Company in 1928 as a means to expand the growing Hawaiian tourism market to the Kona area. Featuring a stunning setting on the coast, the Kona Inn was originally a 20 room hotel that featured a saltwater pool, tennis courts, and a cocktail lounge. At the time Kona was a highly remote destination and the Inn wasnâ€™t even able to have fresh water piped in until 1953. Still, the Kona Inn remained a popular destination for adventurous visitors, and in particular, fisherman. The Inn served as the unofficial headquarters for the billfish tournament as Kona developed a reputation as one of the premier marlin fishing areas in the world. The Kona Inn stopped housing guests in 1976, but still remains a popular destination, largely due to the lavishly refurbished, original restaurant (circa 1928) that reopened in 1979, offering unmatched sunset views and a premier dining experience.

Internationally revered in the automobile racing community, Bonneville National Speed Week is a prominent racing event that takes place over several days and showcases an assortment of courses. One of America’s favorite hobbies was born in Southern California in the 1930s. Prior to hot rods, performance vehicles were primarily confined to pricey luxury vehicles. Attempting to find a more price savvy route to speed and performance, Southern Californians with a passion for renovating cars began modifying Ford Model A and Ford Model T coupes and roadsters. While some stories attribute the name “hot rod” to the modified Ford V8s fueled by bootleg liquor during Prohibition, other stories claim Southern California car clubs invented the term. Gearheads stripped cars of extra weight, lowered suspension to improve handling, upgraded the engine and carburetion to amplify horsepower. Thanks to their limited budgets, the original hot rodders had to be inventive. During the 1950s and 1960s, hot rodding truly took off as NHRA’s national drag strip locations offered hot rods the opportunity to legally compete. Originally formed as a hobby shop, Acme Speed Shop quickly gained popularity, taking the automotive body shop from a garage into a fundamental part of the hot rod industry. In 1961 Floyd Smith, a surfboard manufacturer based in San Diego, California, began printing his company logo on white shirts local surfers brought into Gordon & Smith Surfboards, and the surfer t-shirt was born. By the end of the year, the emerging market in silk-screen printing allowed printing of five-color O’Neill Surf Shop t-shirts and single-color Makaha International Surfing Championships t-shirts. After three years, surf company t-shirts were being produced by the tens of thousands as the market widely expanded to include surf industry team t-shirts and competitor t-shirts for entrants in surf competitions. During the mid-70s, surfer shirts by the California T-Shirts company were available in department stores throughout America and, by 2002, the production of surfer t-shirts had swelled to 300 million shirts annually. Montague Rod Company became the biggest producer of split bamboo rods when it bought out the Chubb Rod Company in 1900. Based out of Montague City, Massachusetts, the company produced everything a fisherman could dream of from spinning, trolling, casting, ocean rods, and fly rods. Montague acquired a large customer base as fisherman passed up on the fancy and sought out the durable, thus drawn to Montague’s reputation of built and priced for the everyday fisherman. Over the years, Montague built more than 300 different fly rod models. Introduced in the late 1920’s, Red Wing was known as the higher end models of Montague. Rapidan was commonly agreed to be the mid level and Sunbeam the most common lower level. Though the company experienced booming success over the years, Montague was forced to close in 1955 after a trade embargo was placed on Chinese goods, causing a shortage of quality bamboo. The legend of Montague continues in the fishing world as companies draw on the magnitude of innovative designs.

In 1927, Joseph Martin created what would become one of America’s most renowned fishing lures. Martin Fish Lure, based in Seattle, Washington, produced a wide variety of lures, such as fly rod poppers, pikes, and injured minnows. Martin Fish Lure was revered for its salmon plugs and quickly became the country’s largest producer. The company primarily focused on saltwater models, like the Model 77, Jetty Model, and the Atom look-alike. The Martin Injured Minnow Lure was manufactured in the 1930's and the company prospered from the successful lures like the Creek Chub Injured Minnow and the Heddon SOS constructed from wood. Although Joseph passed away in 1943, Martin Fish Lure continued to prosper into the 1980's. To this day, the most antique Martin Lures have a frog spot stenciled in red on the belly of the lure. So next time you are casting out, take a moment, flip over your lure and see if the signatory red mark reveals you are reeling in a big catch with one of America’s favorites.

Famed for its delicious baguettes and Eiffel Tower, France also boasts some of the world’s best surf, and is credited with the founding of the world-famous Biarritz Waikiki Surf Club. Côte de Basques Beach in Biarritz, known for its phenomenal surf, became the birthplace of Biarritz Waikiki Surf Club. Since France was not yet manufacturing surfboards during the 1950s, they imported boards from California and constructed and dispersed replicas during the summer of 1957. As young people yearning to ride waves began to repair broken or lost boards, the Tontons Surfers were born as France’s first surf club. On September 16, 1959, Waikiki Surf Club was established by revered surfers George Hennebutte, Michel Barland, Joel Rosnay, Carlos Dogny, Jacques Rott, and Peter Viertel. Soon enough the competitions extended up to include beaches along the Basque Coast and attracted attention from surfers globally. Throughout the 1960s and1970s, surfers were flocking to Biarritz hoping to catch the perfect wave. To this day, France continues to attract surfers from all over the world eager to test the waters of the revered Biarritz Waikiki Surf Club.

MARX Toys founded in 1919 by Louis Marx became an empire as the largest toy manufacturer in the world. During the height of the Great Depression in the 1930's, people were destitute while Marx saw opportunity. He opened factories in Gerard and Erie, Pennsylvania, as well as Marx Toy’s largest factory in Glen Dale, West Virginia. Louis brought to life the toys children dreamed in their imagination, attracting eager boys and girls from all over the United States to Marx products. During the 1950's, Marx Toys achieved the pinnacle of largest toy manufacturer in the world with more than 1/3 of all toys in the United States. Louis “The Toy King'' was featured on the 1955 cover of Time, magazine illustrating how impressive were his astonishing achievements. In 1972, Louis turned 76 and sold his toy company. Yet, it turned out that Louis had been the one with the special touch with toys and the ability to produce wonders that children love. Although Marx Toys no longer exists, the memories endure in the Marx Toys that commemorate the eternal wonders of the toy world kingdom.
