In ancient Hawaii, the surf at Waikiki was second only to the Big Island's Kona Coast. Today, when it comes to surf clubs, the Waikiki Surf Club is second to none. Originally, there was the exclusive Outrigger Canoe Club, which consisted mostly of mainland born haoles, and the Hui Nalu, whose membership included mainly native Hawaiians. In 1948 the best ideals of both clubs were realized in the Waikiki Surf Club.

Hawai`i is home to over 70 native bird varieties of which 90% are federally protected, endangered or that have been designated a high conservation concern. With so many birds in critical need of protection, the Hawai`i Wildlife Center on The Big Island has been caring for and rehabilitating these native species since 2004. Among the birds needing the most attention is Hawaii’s state bird, the Nene (Hawaiian Goose). The Nene population was down to just 30 in 1952, but due to successful breeding in captivity the wild population has now grown to over 2500 individuals. These medium sized geese can now be found on Hawai`i, Maui, Moloka`i, and Kaua`i.

Elvis Presley performed in front of 4,000 screaming fans at Bloch Arena in Hawaii, on March 25, 1961, at the USS Arizona Memorial benefit concert commemorating the honorable soldiers who sunk with the USS Arizona during the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Elvis said the only way he would perform is if every penny of the proceeds went to the memorial as the fundraising had stalled with only half of what was needed. Elvis bought half the special seats for patients of Tripler Hospital in Hawaii, performing 15 songs culminating in a slide across the stage on his knees. Elvis’s concert regenerated public awareness and donations poured in. A little over a year later on May 30, 1962, the memorial was completed. Having served in the U.S. Army, Elvis's passion for aiding the military convinced others to join the cause and in August 1965, when Elvis returned to Hawaii to film Paradise Hawaiian Style he visited the memorial and left a bell shaped wreath made of 1,177 carnations, in honor of the people who lost their lives aboard the Arizona, reading “Gone but not forgotten."

In 1961 Floyd Smith, a surfboard manufacturer based in San Diego, California, began printing his company logo on white shirts local surfers brought into Gordon & Smith Surfboards, and the surfer t-shirt was born. By the end of the year, the emerging market in silk-screen printing allowed printing of five-color O’Neill Surf Shop t-shirts and single-color Makaha International Surfing Championships t-shirts. After three years, surf company t-shirts were being produced by the tens of thousands as the market widely expanded to include surf industry team t-shirts and competitor t-shirts for entrants in surf competitions. During the mid-70s, surfer shirts by the California T-Shirts company were available in department stores throughout America and, by 2002, the production of surfer t-shirts had swelled to 300 million shirts annually. Their popularity skyrocketed as the entertainment industry modeled them through Mackenzie Phillips in American Graffiti and Robert Duvall in Apocalypse Now. Trans World Airlines history dates all the way back to 1930 when they had the aviation pioneers like Charles Lindbergh and Jack Frye helping them build their brand as “The Airline Run by Flyers.” TWA was the chief rival to Pan American Airways for international travel, beginning in the 1940's. Their all-jet fleet was recognized all over the world and their trailblazing contributions to airport design helped revolutionize the industry. TWA went through multiple bankruptcies in the 1990's before merging with American Airlines in 2001.

Edward Fletcher and Co. began manufacturing men’s and boy's wear in Australia in 1939 and continued to be a common apparel brand for many decades. In 1972, the company saw an opportunity in the market to introduce a low cost, but well styled short which they called Stubbies. That same year, Stubbies went on to sell over 750,000 pairs, and by 1978 these shorts were so successful that the company officially changed its name to Stubbies Clothing Co. In the late 1970’s and into the 1980’s Stubbies sponsored a series of trial events in California, Hawaii and Florida to help contestants to qualify for the Stubbies Surf Classic. If you’re wondering about the name, legend says they were trying to come up with a name for the shorts and a tired salesmen got up and said, “This is thirsty work, I’m going out for a stubbie [of beer].” The name stuck.

As with many early air carriers, Western Airlines began in 1925 as a mail carrier service. Based in California, Western went through many stages over its sixty plus year existence. When it began serving as a commercial airline it initially focused on the Western United States. In 1969 it began offering service to Honolulu and Hilo with high end service which they called The Islander routes. During its prime in the 1970's and 1980's Western increased it's service to Hawaii and also offered flights to Kahului and Kona. In 1986 Western entered into a merger with Delta Airlines, and the Western Airlines name was retired.

Originally established in 1968 and founded by shaper Dave Garner, Plastic Fantastic Surfboards began a history that would span five decades, over half a dozen owners, and factories in 3 states. The name Plastic Fantastic was inspired by the Jefferson Airplane song “Plastic Fantastic Lover.” The original home for Plastic Fantastic was in Haleiwa, Hawaii from 1968 to 1970, followed by two more years of production at a different location on the North Shore. At the same time, Garner and Danny Calohan would open shop in Huntington Beach, California, and the company would employ a stable of gifted shapers through the years, including Skip Frye, Jock Sutherland, Robert August, Bruce Jones, and Barry Kanaiaupuni. From 1968 to 2003 it is estimated that Plastic Fantastic produced approximately 55,000 surfboards.

An additional kaleidoscope snorkeling experience is located in the ancient volcanic cinder cone about 3 miles off Maui’s south shore- Molokini. This islet and the surrounding 77 underwater acres were announced a Marine Life Conservation District in 1977, thus protected by the federal government. Molokini’s unique shape was created during World War II when the United States Navy used Molokini for target practice. Today, the exquisite islet offers a wide variety of corals and marine organisms inhabiting its sea life sanctuary.

Hawai’i’s original beer is back! The tradition of brewing beer on the Islands began with Honolulu’s Don Francisco de Paula Marin all the way back in 1812. Bell Helicopter was originally founded in Buffalo, New York in 1935 as Bell Aircraft Corporation by Lawrence Bell. Martin, was building his first aircraft in a rented church building, with the encouragement of Orville Wright. 400 miles North in San Francisco, brothers Allan and Malcolm Lockheed were developing seaplanes that would shatter records for distance and speed. Both companies would continue to evolve over the next 80 years consistently producing some of the finest aircraft in the world mostly for military use. This included the Stealth and Blackbird planes developed by Lockheed‘s secret Skunk Works division, and Martin creating everything from the P-38 Lightning plane to many of the rockets that helped propel the American space program. The two companies merged in 1995 forming Lockheed Martin as an aviation powerhouse. Today the company continues to develop a wide array of aircraft, aerospace, and defense products including the new F-35 Lightining, for which there is a flight simulator located at Pearl Harbor.

The Malibu Surf Club was founded in 1952 by a small but dedicated group of surfers that included such well-known members as Matt Kivlin, Les Williams, Joe and Aggie Quigg, Nina "Honeybear" Warren, and rat pack original - Peter Lawford. Founded in 1961 by Gordon "Grubby" Clark in Laguna Niguel, California, Clark Foam revolutionized the surfing industry by producing polyurethane foam blanks. These blanks provided a basic surfboard construction for shapers to refine into their own individual models, and the blanks themselves were actually designed for Clark by such legendary shapers as Dale Velzy and Dick Brewer. At one point before closing in 2005, it is estimated that Clark supplied about 90% of all surfboard blanks in the entire world.

Street racing burned rubber through Los Angeles, California during the 1950s drawing fans of all ages with raucous noise and adrenaline thrills to this all-American sport. Opening its gates in October 1955, Lions Drag Strip welcomed 15,000 people to witness cars race in the Wilmington district of sunny L.A. The Lions Club International sponsored the beloved track, hosting a variety of races licensed by the American Hot Rod Association. After consistently holding races every Sunday for the next two years, Mickey Thompson, the strip manager, proposed Saturday night racing, leading to a rapid escalation of young fans in attendance. The drag strip thrived until 1972 when it was torn down to allow space for shipping cargo containers overseas. The memory of Lions Drag Strip cruises on today being honored through pop culture with comedians paying tribute to announcer Larry Huffman’s wired announcing style, in television series like The Munsters and MadMen , and Brad Pitt’s character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wearing a Lions Drag Strip t-shirt.

Maui is famous for its beauty and laid-back attitude, but the Valley Island also has a rich heritage in surfing. Its modern history can be traced back to the Ho'okipa Surfriders Club formed in 1935. The club held surfboard paddling races in Kahului Harbor on Kamehameha Day in 1939, and again in 1959 when surfing began a new revival. They renamed themselves Maui Surf Club and held the First Annual Lahaina Invitational Surfboard Paddling Races, dated June 11, 1960.

In ancient Hawaii, the surf at Waikiki was second only to the Big Island’s Kona Coast. Today, when it comes to surf clubs, the Waikiki Surf Club is second to none. Originally, there was the exclusive Outrigger Canoe Club, which consisted mostly of mainland-born haoles, and the Hui Nalu, whose membership included mainly native Hawaiians. In 1948 the best ideals of both clubs were realized in the Waikiki Surf Club.

Believe it or not, Hawaii does, indeed, have an interstate highway. Now, you ask, how can an island have an interstate highway? Well, U.S. law states that federal highway funds can be used as long as the proposed highway connects military bases. Oahu’s Honolulu Highway, known to locals as “H1,” connects Pearl Harbor with Diamond Head, which used to be home to Fort Ruger.
