Founded in 1961 by Gordon "Grubby" Clark in Laguna Niguel, California, Clark Foam revolutionized the surfing industry by producing polyurethane foam blanks. These blanks provided a basic surfboard construction for shapers to refine into their own individual models, and the blanks themselves were actually designed for Clark by such legendary shapers as Dale Velzy and Dick Brewer. At one point before closing in 2005, it is estimated that Clark supplied about 90% of all surfboard blanks in the entire world.

The Strong Current Surf Shop has been a staple on the North Shore since 1989. The shop was founded by the husband-and-wife team of Johnny and Bonnie Moore, who left New Jersey for a slice of Hawaiian heaven. Originally the shop sold surfboards, surfboard accessories and apparel, but it quickly became evident that their apparel, which they were screen printing upstairs from their shop, was the big draw. In 1993 the shop also became the home for the Hale'iwa Surf Museum. A surf museum in an apparel store, what a crazy idea, right?

Opening its gates in October 1955, Lions Drag Strip welcomed 15,000 people to witness cars race in the Wilmington district of sunny L.A. The Lions Club International sponsored the beloved track, hosting a variety of races licensed by the American Hot Rod Association. After consistently holding races every Sunday for the next two years, Mickey Thompson, the strip manager, proposed Saturday night racing, leading to a rapid escalation of young fans in attendance. While snow may be the last thing you think of when you think about Hawaii, it does exist. Hawaii actually gets snow on it's three highest Volcano peaks - Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Haleakala. Mauna Kea is the highest point in Hawaii, standing 13,796 feet above sea level and it's name actually means "white mountain" in reference to its peak which is frequently covered in snow during the winter months. Occasionally there is enough snow on the ground for snow skiing. There are no chair lifts or ski lodges, so people will drive to the summit, drop off their skiers, and meet them at the bottom of the run. The first recorded skiers on Mauna Kea were Dudley Lewis and his son in 1936 and skiing Maua Kea has grown in popularity over the years, especially after the summit road was completed in 1964. There are very loose records of impromptu skiing contests being held there as early as 1948 with the popularity and participation of the contests beginning to grow in the 1960's.

Based out of Montague City, Massachusetts, the company produced everything a fisherman could dream of from spinning, trolling, casting, ocean rods, and fly rods. Montague acquired a large customer base as fisherman passed up on the fancy and sought out the durable, thus drawn to Montague’s reputation of built and priced for the everyday fisherman. Over the years, Montague built more than 300 different fly rod models. Introduced in the late 1920’s, Red Wing was known as the higher end models of Montague. Rapidan was commonly agreed to be the mid level and Sunbeam the most common lower level. Though the company experienced booming success over the years, Montague was forced to close in 1955 after a trade embargo was placed on Chinese goods, causing a shortage of quality bamboo. As with many early air carriers, Western Airlines began in 1925 as a mail carrier service. Based in California, Western went through many stages over its sixty plus year existence. When it began serving as a commercial airline it initially focused on the Western United States. In 1969 it began offering service to Honolulu and Hilo with high end service which they called The Islander routes. Famed for its delicious baguettes and Eiffel Tower, France also boasts some of the world’s best surf, and is credited with the founding of the world-famous Biarritz Waikiki Surf Club. Côte de Basques Beach in Biarritz, known for its phenomenal surf, became the birthplace of Biarritz Waikiki Surf Club. Since France was not yet manufacturing surfboards during the 1950s, they imported boards from California and constructed and dispersed replicas during the summer of 1957. As young people yearning to ride waves began to repair broken or lost boards, the Tontons Surfers were born as France’s first surf club. On September 16, 1959, Waikiki Surf Club was established by revered surfers George Hennebutte, Michel Barland, Joel Rosnay, Carlos Dogny, Jacques Rott, and Peter Viertel. With a stingingly fastpitch, the Maui Stingrays hit home their origins in Wailuku, Hawaii during 1993. They went on to win two league and division championships. Unit price perIn 1961 Floyd Smith, a surfboard manufacturer based in San Diego, California, began printing his company logo on white shirts local surfers brought into Gordon & Smith Surfboards, and the surfer t-shirt was born. By the end of the year, the emerging market in silk-screen printing allowed printing of five-color O’Neill Surf Shop t-shirts and single-color Makaha International Surfing Championships t-shirts. After three years, surf t-shirts were being produced by the tens of thousands as the market widely expanded to include surf industry team t-shirts, competitor t-shirts for entrants in surf competitions and souvenirs from surfing destinations like Hawaii. During the mid-70s, surfer shirts by the California T-Shirts company were available in department stores throughout America and, by 2002, the production of surfer t-shirts had swelled to 300 million shirts annually. Their popularity skyrocketed as the entertainment industry modeled them through Mackenzie Phillips in American Graffiti and Robert Duvall in Apocalypse Now. Today, surfer t-shirts continue to thrive worldwide and remind people of the rich history and blessing of surfing.

Montague Rod Company became the biggest producer of split bamboo rods when it bought out the Chubb Rod Company in 1900. Based out of Montague City, Massachusetts, the company produced everything a fisherman could dream of from spinning, trolling, casting, ocean rods, and fly rods. Montague acquired a large customer base as fisherman passed up on the fancy and sought out the durable, thus drawn to Montague’s reputation of built and priced for the everyday fisherman. Over the years, Montague built more than 300 different fly rod models. Introduced in the late 1920’s, Red Wing was known as the higher end models of Montague. Rapidan was commonly agreed to be the mid level and Sunbeam the most common lower level. Though the company experienced booming success over the years, Montague was forced to close in 1955 after a trade embargo was placed on Chinese goods, causing a shortage of quality bamboo. The legend of Montague continues in the fishing world as companies draw on the magnitude of innovative designs.

In 1927, Joseph Martin created what would become one of America’s most renowned fishing lures. Martin Fish Lure, based in Seattle, Washington, produced a wide variety of lures, such as fly rod poppers, pikes, and injured minnows. Martin Fish Lure was revered for its salmon plugs and quickly became the country’s largest producer. The company primarily focused on saltwater models, like the Model 77, Jetty Model, and the Atom look-alike. The Martin Injured Minnow Lure was manufactured in the 1930's and the company prospered from the successful lures like the Creek Chub Injured Minnow and the Heddon SOS constructed from wood. Although Joseph passed away in 1943, Martin Fish Lure continued to prosper into the 1980's. To this day, the most antique Martin Lures have a frog spot stenciled in red on the belly of the lure. So next time you are casting out, take a moment, flip over your lure and see if the signatory red mark reveals you are reeling in a big catch with one of America’s favorites.
