Bell Helicopter was originally founded in Buffalo, New York in 1935 as Bell Aircraft Corporation by Lawrence Bell. Bell was originally focused on the development of fighter aircraft for military purposes, introducing models such as the Airacuda, Airacobra, and the first American fighter jet, called the Airacomet. However in 1941, Bell with the help of innovator Arthur Young, began research on Helicopters, flying their first model, the Bell 30, in 1942. Later models, such as the Bell 47 and the UH-1, better known as the Huey, were critical components in military operations. Founded in 1961 by Gordon "Grubby" Clark in Laguna Niguel, California, Clark Foam revolutionized the surfing industry by producing polyurethane foam blanks. Street racing burned rubber through Los Angeles, California during the 1950s drawing fans of all ages with raucous noise and adrenaline thrills to this all-American sport. Opening its gates in October 1955, Lions Drag Strip welcomed 15,000 people to witness cars race in the Wilmington district of sunny L.A. The Lions Club International sponsored the beloved track, hosting a variety of races licensed by the American Hot Rod Association. After consistently holding races every Sunday for the next two years, Mickey Thompson, the strip manager, proposed Saturday night racing, leading to a rapid escalation of young fans in attendance. Free-range chickens roam the Hawaiian islands, an unusual attraction visitors love to talk about. They are believed to be descendants of birds freed when Hurricane Iwa in 1982 and Hurricane Iniki in 1992 destroyed coops. Originating in the 1920s in California and Hawaii, dog surfing has become a popular world-wide phenomenon, drawing in crowds eager to see dogs trained to surf on bodyboards and surfboards, either with a human or solo. On the Waves in Waikiki , a silent film released in the 1930s, showcases Phillip K. Auna and his terrier Night Hawk, who is able to hang ten while surfing with his owner. In the 1950s, a photograph of Joseph “Scooter Boy” Kaopuiki and Sandy, his dog, surfing in Hawaii was published in UPI and distributed throughout the United States. In 2006, at Imperial Beach in California, the first Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition was held and, today, continues to be the largest dog surfing competition in the U.S. When competing in canine surfing competitions, dogs are judged based on board size, dog’s confidence, and wave length and size. Competitors are able to register their dog in categories ranging from single or tandem surfing to dog size. Originally founded in 1946 under the name Trans-Pacific Airlines, Aloha Airlines was launched by Ruddy F Tongg, Sr. with the concept of having an airline to connect California, Hawaii, and China. In its earlier years, the company was focused primarily on inter-island flights in Hawaii and its service quickly led to the airline earning the nickname "The Aloha Airline", a name which was incorporated into the official name TPA-The Aloha Airline in 1950. In 1958, the company dropped the TPA portion of its name and would move into the future under the Aloha Airlines name. During the late 50's and into the 60's, Aloha Airlines would remain near the front of the rapidly evolving airline industry technologies. They were the second airline in the United States to move completely to a strictly turbine operated fleet. By 1966 they were already making the push into an all-jet fleet that would eventually feature Boeing 737-200 jets that were fondly nicknamed "Funbirds". Aloha would continue to offer inter-island service as well as flights to the US Mainland until it eventually ceased operation in 2008. Although Aloha Airlines no longer operates it played a significant role in Hawaii's aviation history and opened up access to Hawaii's islands to generations of passengers.

Today, the station is used for NASA’s Goddard Crustal Dynamics Project and the US Naval Observatory. While NASA’s main training base, The Johnson’s Center is located in Houston, Texas, the Big Island’s lava fields are another prime training spot. The volcanic terrain simulates what a mission to Mars would look like. While the mainland is home to NASA’s headquarters and numerous field centers, Hawaii serves as an integral part of NASA’s endeavors, facilitating and aiding in space travel.

In the Hawaiian language, Lahaina means “merciless sun” characterizing the arid climate. Legend has it, a bald ali’i (chief) was walking without a hat feeling the relentless sun beating down on his head, looking upwards he cursed the sun. During the 19th century, Lahaina became the center of the global whaling industry. Although Lahaina was the capital of Hawaii in the early 1800s, the capital was moved back to Honolulu in 1845 because it offered a deeper harbor for the growing number of whaling ships. Eventually, Lahaina became a favorite tourist destination, immersing visitors in its incredible natural beauty and educating them on native Hawaiian culture. Sadly, in August 2023, a wildfire decimated most of Lahaina. More than 11,000 people had to evacuate. The Pacific Disaster Center estimates the damage around $5.52 billion. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lahaina during recovery.

In the 1950s, a photograph of Joseph “Scooter Boy” Kaopuiki and Sandy, his dog, surfing in Hawaii was published in UPI and distributed throughout the United States. In 2006, at Imperial Beach in California, the first Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition was held and, today, continues to be the largest dog surfing competition in the U.S. When competing in canine surfing competitions, dogs are judged based on board size, dog’s confidence, and wave length and size. Competitors are able to register their dog in categories ranging from single or tandem surfing to dog size. Hawaii offers a host of dog friendly beaches from the beloved Waikiki Beach in Honolulu to Kailua Beach located near a dog-friendly mall to Kalapaki Beach, home to the popular Freddie’s Dog Park.
