Surfer magazine called Makaha one of the “25 Best Waves in the World.” Hawaiian for “fierce,” Makaha is regarded in many circles as the home of big wave surfing, due in large part to the 30-foot wave that Greg “Da Bull” Noll caught in 1969. Until the advent of tow-in surfing, it was the largest wave ever ridden.
From 1954 to 1971, Makaha was home to the biggest surf competition of the day, the Makaha International Surfing Championships. Honolulu surfer and restaurant supplier John Lind created the winter contest, sponsored by the Waianae Lions Club and Waikiki Surf Club, to attract the world’s best surfers.

While snow may be the last thing you think of when you think about Hawaii, it does exist. Hawaii actually gets snow on it's three highest Volcano peaks - Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Haleakala. Mauna Kea is the highest point in Hawaii, standing 13,796 feet above sea level and it's name actually means "white mountain" in reference to its peak which is frequently covered in snow during the winter months. Occasionally there is enough snow on the ground for snow skiing. There are no chair lifts or ski lodges, so people will drive to the summit, drop off their skiers, and meet them at the bottom of the run. The first recorded skiers on Mauna Kea were Dudley Lewis and his son in 1936 and skiing Maua Kea has grown in popularity over the years, especially after the summit road was completed in 1964. There are very loose records of impromptu skiing contests being held there as early as 1948 with the popularity and participation of the contests beginning to grow in the 1960's.

Originating in the 1920s in California and Hawaii, dog surfing has become a popular world-wide phenomenon, drawing in crowds eager to see dogs trained to surf on bodyboards and surfboards, either with a human or solo. On the Waves in Waikiki , a silent film released in the 1930s, showcases Phillip K. Auna and his terrier Night Hawk, who is able to hang ten while surfing with his owner. In the 1950s, a photograph of Joseph “Scooter Boy” Kaopuiki and Sandy, his dog, surfing in Hawaii was published in UPI and distributed throughout the United States. In 2006, at Imperial Beach in California, the first Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition was held and, today, continues to be the largest dog surfing competition in the U.S. When competing in canine surfing competitions, dogs are judged based on board size, dog’s confidence, and wave length and size. Competitors are able to register their dog in categories ranging from single or tandem surfing to dog size. Hawaii offers a host of dog friendly beaches from the beloved Waikiki Beach in Honolulu to Kailua Beach located near a dog-friendly mall to Kalapaki Beach, home to the popular Freddie’s Dog Park.

Founded in 1961 by Gordon "Grubby" Clark in Laguna Niguel, California, Clark Foam revolutionized the surfing industry by producing polyurethane foam blanks. These blanks provided a basic surfboard construction for shapers to refine into their own individual models, and the blanks themselves were actually designed for Clark by such legendary shapers as Dale Velzy and Dick Brewer. At one point before closing in 2005, it is estimated that Clark supplied about 90% of all surfboard blanks in the entire world.

Hawai’i’s original beer is back! The tradition of brewing beer on the Islands began with Honolulu’s Don Francisco de Paula Marin all the way back in 1812. Founded in Haleiwa in 1961, Surfboards Hawaii was the performance board of choice for the biggest names in surfing during the Sixties. Inter-Island Airways was incorporated in 1929 and flew amphibian planes between John Rogers Airport on Oahu and the neighboring Islands. In addition to transporting air mail, light freight and passengers, Inter-Island Airways also ran sightseeing flights over Oahu. For 12 years, Inter-Island serviced the Hawaiian Islands before changing their name to Hawaiian Airlines in 1941 and phasing out the older amphibian planes.

Originally, there was the exclusive Outrigger Canoe Club, which consisted mostly of mainland-born haoles, and the Hui Nalu, whose membership included mainly native Hawaiians. In 1948 the best ideals of both clubs were realized in the Waikiki Surf Club.

At the end of the 1960s and into the early 1970s, business was booming at the races as a multitude of radio ads sparked interest among pop radio station listeners in San Francisco Bay, beckoning them to the thrill of the competitions. Races fueled the economy in the surrounding area as thousands of fans were eager to witness world-record performances by Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, Connie Kalitta, and more. Many champions heralded the low humidity air from the San Francisco Bay that allowed them to acquire astounding speeds. In the late 1950's, Waikiki Surf Club member Clarence Maki was inspired to create an organization for juniors to participate in surf contests. The "Surf Club Hawaii" was officially formed and offered its members monthly surfing and paddling contests, as well as an annual surfing championship held for the public. The contest held in 1961 was a rousing success, which signaled the start of 12 years if excitement for the young surfers of Hawaii. Although most youngsters did not go on to pursue surfing professionally, the friendships they forged and all the great memories would stay with them forever.

Originating in 1960, the Hawaiian Canoe Club began with John M. Lake and 25 other members with Hawaiian ancestry, with the christened Kokololio-Swift Winds of Waikapu- as the club’s first canoe. Growing in size, the club competed in its first state regatta in 1962, merging paddlers from Hawaiian, Kahului, and Lahaina canoe clubs to create the crews. Hawaiian Canoe Club advocated good relations with other canoe clubs by loaning canoes to other clubs, not only modeling the spirit of Aloha but increasing the popularity of the sport. After transitioning into racing primarily fiberglass canoes in 1967, the HCC won its first Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association Championship in 1985 and continued to win the title every year since. With the HCC still going strong today, leaders created Hawaiian Kamali’i, Inc., a program designed to educate children on Hawaiian culture, religion, navigation, traditional food preparation, and leadership. HCC continues to uphold the tradition of outrigger canoe paddling, focusing on enlightening the youth of key Hawaiian values of respect for nature and people.

Originally founded in 1946 under the name Trans-Pacific Airlines, Aloha Airlines was launched by Ruddy F Tongg, Sr. with the concept of having an airline to connect California, Hawaii, and China. In its earlier years, the company was focused primarily on inter-island flights in Hawaii and its service quickly led to the airline earning the nickname "The Aloha Airline", a name which was incorporated into the official name TPA-The Aloha Airline in 1950. In 1958, the company dropped the TPA portion of its name and would move into the future under the Aloha Airlines name. During the late 50's and into the 60's, Aloha Airlines would remain near the front of the rapidly evolving airline industry technologies. They were the second airline in the United States to move completely to a strictly turbine operated fleet. By 1966 they were already making the push into an all-jet fleet that would eventually feature Boeing 737-200 jets that were fondly nicknamed "Funbirds". Aloha would continue to offer inter-island service as well as flights to the US Mainland until it eventually ceased operation in 2008. Although Aloha Airlines no longer operates it played a significant role in Hawaii's aviation history and opened up access to Hawaii's islands to generations of passengers.

For the best plate meals in Waikiki, you actually have to head to Kapahulu. Situated a short distance up the road from Diamond Head, Rainbow Drive-In serves up ono grindz, which visitors to Hawai'i quickly learn means delicious food. Seiju Ifuku, the founder of Rainbow Drive-In, learned to cook while serving in the Army during World War II. He and his wife Ayako opened up Rainbow Drive-In in 1961. Like many of the early fliers, American Airlines started as a conglomeration of smaller regional airlines whose primary business was delivering US Mail. After World War II, American expanded its passenger business, including transcontinental jet service and routes to Hawaii. By 1970 there was a direct flight from New York to Honolulu, offering many mainlanders their first chance to visit the beautiful Aloha State. A few years later in 1973, American became the first major airline to employ a female pilot. Throughout the years American Airlines has been a major innovator in aviation and helped spread Aloha around the globe.

In 1957 Half Moon Bay Airport became one of racing’s fastest, most attractive quarter-mile drag strips. Located just outside of San Francisco, Half Moon Bay Dragstrip, became the largest drag strip in Northern California offering bleachers, concession stands, a safety net, and a timing tower constructed from a bread van, to its many fans. Big name racers, including “Big Daddy” Don Garlits and Don “the Snake” Prudhomme, attracted enthusiasts from across the United States to witness the historical race in which Garlits pulled off an unexpected win though Prudhomme’s name had been etched into the trophy even before the race took place. Although racing stopped in 1969, the nostalgic memories of Sunday morning’s roaring engines, wild cheering, and buzz of adrenaline-fueled excitement live on in the tales of drag racing.
