In the Hawaiian language, Lahaina means “merciless sun” characterizing the arid climate. Legend has it, a bald ali’i (chief) was walking without a hat feeling the relentless sun beating down on his head, looking upwards he cursed the sun. During the 19th century, Lahaina became the center of the global whaling industry. Although Lahaina was the capital of Hawaii in the early 1800s, the capital was moved back to Honolulu in 1845 because it offered a deeper harbor for the growing number of whaling ships. Eventually, Lahaina became a favorite tourist destination, immersing visitors in its incredible natural beauty and educating them on native Hawaiian culture. Sadly, in August 2023, a wildfire decimated most of Lahaina. More than 11,000 people had to evacuate. The Pacific Disaster Center estimates the damage around $5.52 billion. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lahaina during recovery.

Today, the three-hour drive to Hana is a popular tourist attraction, famous for its rich cultural history and exquisite natural landscapes. In 1962, the Hana Highway formed when 52 miles of land were paved to connect Kahului in east Maui to Hana. Although 56 one-lane bridges and 617 curves in the road make the highway a famed tourist attraction, the historical sites along the drive are a window into Maui’s cultural past. Founded in 1961 by Gordon "Grubby" Clark in Laguna Niguel, California, Clark Foam revolutionized the surfing industry by producing polyurethane foam blanks. These blanks provided a basic surfboard construction for shapers to refine into their own individual models, and the blanks themselves were actually designed for Clark by such legendary shapers as Dale Velzy and Dick Brewer. At one point before closing in 2005, it is estimated that Clark supplied about 90% of all surfboard blanks in the entire world.

The famed Waikiki Beach Boys have been a significant part of Hawaiian beach culture since the early 1900s. Originally, the Beach Boys came into existence with the opening of the Moana Hotel in 1901, offering not only skilled instruction in canoeing and surfing to hotel guests but also an introduction to Hawaiian culture and a welcoming aloha spirit. In 1906, Edward “Dude” Miller helped to arrange a beach concession, offering the hotel guests a host of services to explore the beach and ocean. Many of the Beach Boys were pulled from the Hui Nalu and were held to a strict code of conduct including no drinking, no gambling, being clean shaven and keeping their hands off female guests. The Beach Boys also took it upon themselves to keep the beaches safe and clean for visitors and kama’aina alike. Some of the best known and most beloved Beach Boys included Blue Makua Sr., Duke Kahanamoku, Sam Kahanamoku, Rabbit Kekai, Steamboat Mokuahi, and Panama Dave.

Opened in 1962, Hawaii Raceway Park thrilled the residents and visitors of Ewa Beach and the surrounding areas with world class racing events for 42 years. The 66-acre Raceway Park played host to both professional and amateur racing of funny cars, stock cars, dragsters, and motocross and more until its eventual shutdown in 2006. Over its active years, the park included a ¼ mile racing track, drag strip, as well as a motocross and BMX venue.

Though unofficial, it’s universally accepted on the Islands that Hawaii’s state fish is the Humuhumunukunukuapuaa. How on earth do you say that?! Well, it’s really quite easy: HOO-moo-HOO-moo-NEW-coo-NEW-coo-AH-poo-AH-ah. Now, try saying that three times fast. If that’s too hard to say, you might just want to call it by its other name, the Hawaiian Trigger Fish. Whew, much easier. Roughly, its name means, fish with a pig-nosed face, which is appropriate given the fact that these funny fishes also grunt.

Shaved ice has been a Hawaiian tradition ever since the plantation days. Hot, exhausted workers would shave a block of ice with a hand saw and flavor it with juice, which is basically the same way it's done today! The Aoki family has been making shave ice since the 1930's when the Shimoda family sold the cool treat in the old Haliewa Theater. After the theatre closed, Sumie Shimoda Aoki and her son Michael Aoki, opened up Aoki's Shave Ice in 1981. Nestled in historic Haliewa town, Aoki's makes all their own syrup daily and offers delicious flavors of ice cream and smoothies as well.

Starting in 1927 with a vision, some single engine aircraft and a few trans-oceanic routes, Pan Am's emphasis on image and branding created the "jet-setter" lifestyle. Today the sport of surfing and its cultural impact is felt all around the globe. Surfing was an integral part of life among native Hawaiians when Europeans began to arrive in the late 18th century. After being labeled as a taboo by Missionaries, surfing had a major resurgence in the mid 1900s. The history of surfing can be see through the evolution of Hawaiian surfboards from the ancient paipo to the modern shortboard. Lifesize replicas of many of these boards are on display in the Malibu Shirts surf museum.

Academy award nominated director, Bruce Brown spent two years chasing summer around the world and capturing footage that set the standard for all future surf films. Surfers Michael Hynson and Robert August were lucky enough to get to search for the perfect wave off the coasts of Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti and Hawai'i. Screened to audiences in Southern California in 1964, and distributed world-wide in 1966, The Endless Summer would go onto generate over $30 million dollars at the box office, and take its rightful place as the king of surf videos.
