Opening its doors in the early 1980s, Maui Downhill is considered a pioneer in the commercial bike touring industry. Revered for its employees' extensive knowledge of the Hawaiian Islands and kind spirit of aloha, Maui Downhill is one of the islands namesake's oldest and largest tour bike companies. Bike seats fill fast as eager tourists, attracted to the idea of biking 37 miles down a volcano, race to reserve seats. The company brings people into the park to see the beautiful sunrise, then leads them on a bike tour of the Haleakala National Park to experience the tropical beauty and wildlife unique to Maui. As Maui Downhill’s success grew, so did the number of tourists in the national park. National Park officials decided to cut down on the permitted tours to reduce environmental impact and overcrowding. After a prosperous three decades of existence, Maui Downhill agreed to close its doors in support of nature when Haleakala National Park reduced the amount of tour companies permitted to operate in the park.
