Opening in 1879, the Kahului Railroad was constructed in response to the rapidly growing sugar cane industry which demanded sugar be speedily transported to ports for international distribution. The railroad traveled 15 miles from Wailuku to Kuiaha located on the Maui’s north coast, and was the first public railway system of the Hawaiian Islands. After being purchased by the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co., the railway was further extended, crossing the Maliko Gorge on Hawaii’s highest railway bridge. In 1959, the Kahului Railroad was officially Hawaii’s last public railway, earning the title of the longest operating time of 87 years. After Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. was taken over by Alexander & Baldwin in 1962, the railway was deconstructed, though some parts were used in the construction of the Lahaina Kaanapali and Pacific Railroad, a tourist train now operating on the west side of Maui.
