On the western shore at Polihale State Park, “Barking Sands” gets its name from dry sand grains that squeak underfoot. The island’s famous wild chickens, descendants of Polynesian junglefowl and escapees from storms like Hurricane Iniki, now roam freely without natural predators. Wild, rain-carved, and wonderfully untamed, Kauai remains a living reminder of old Hawaii.
