Called The Garden Isle for its lush valleys and year-round greenery, Kauai’s landscape is shaped by heavy rainfall from Mount Waialeale, one of the wettest places on Earth and the source of the island’s rivers and waterfalls. As the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands, its dramatic cliffs and fertile land supported early Hawaiian taro farming long before plantation days. In 1961 Elivs Presley filmed Blue Hawaii as tourism was taking off and in 1966 Dick Brewer, legendary board shaper, moved to the island just a few years before the hippies created their commune called Taylor Camp in North Shore's Ha'ena State park where they lived in tree houses, practiced free love, and clothing was optional. On the western shore at Polihale State Park, “Barking Sands” gets its name from dry sand grains that squeak underfoot. The island’s famous wild chickens, descendants of Polynesian junglefowl and escapees from storms like Hurricane Iniki, now roam freely without natural predators. Wild, rain-carved, and wonderfully untamed, Kauai remains a living reminder of old Hawaii.
