The beloved animated character Gumby was first created in the early 1950s by Art Clokey, who had been developing his clay animation techniques at the University of Southern California. In 1955, Clokey created a pilot featuring Gumby, which was immediately picked up by executives at NBC, who featured a Gumby short called ”Gumby on the Moon” on the Howdy Doody show in 1956. Gumby became an instant hit, and in 1957, Gumby had his own show that ran through the ‘50s and ‘60s. Gumby was later revived in 1988, with a new set of adventures, once again following Gumby and his friends through a variety of locations and historical times. Founded in 1961 by Gordon "Grubby" Clark in Laguna Niguel, California, Clark Foam revolutionized the surfing industry by producing polyurethane foam blanks. The Malibu Surf Club was founded in 1952 by a small but dedicated group of surfers that included such well-known members as Matt Kivlin, Les Williams, Joe and Aggie Quigg, Nina "Honeybear" Warren, and rat pack original - Peter Lawford. Today the sport of surfing and its cultural impact is felt all around the globe. Surfing was an integral part of life among native Hawaiians when Europeans began to arrive in the late 18th century. Opened in 1962, Hawaii Raceway Park thrilled the residents and visitors of Ewa Beach and the surrounding areas with world class racing events for 42 years. Maui is famous for its beauty and laid-back attitude, but the Valley Island also has a rich heritage in surfing. Its modern history can be traced back to the Ho'okipa Surfriders Club formed in 1935. The club held surfboard paddling races in Kahului Harbor on Kamehameha Day in 1939, and again in 1959 when surfing began a new revival. The Hawaiian Masters was conceived and developed by Fred Hemmings three years after he won the 1968 World Surfing Championships.
