Chain stitching holds a unique place in the fashion world as it is handmade unlike modern machine embroidery you see on most clothing. There are no programmed designs or computers used in the process, rather the stitching is done by hand, making each item one of a kind. The hand stitching machines, typically either a Comely or Singer, are treadle tables operated by a foot pedal and controlled with a hand-crank. Chain Stitching is a time-intensive process that requires a steady hand and great attention to detail. It also produces some of the most elaborate and intricate designs as it allows the artist to produce vivid detail through the meticulous methods. Due to the mastery and time-demanding nature of this art, there are not many people who know how to do it. Maui is famous for its beauty and laid-back attitude, but the Valley Island also has a rich heritage in surfing. Its modern history can be traced back to the Ho'okipa Surfriders Club formed in 1935. The club held surfboard paddling races in Kahului Harbor on Kamehameha Day in 1939, and again in 1959 when surfing began a new revival. They renamed themselves Maui Surf Club and held the First Annual Lahaina Invitational Surfboard Paddling Races, dated June 11, 1960.
