The Malibu Surf Club was founded in 1952 by a small but dedicated group of surfers that included such well-known members as Matt Kivlin, Les Williams, Joe and Aggie Quigg, Nina "Honeybear" Warren, and rat pack original - Peter Lawford. Kivlin designed the original lettering for the club logo which first appeared on a classic surf sweater with the sewn-on hood.

Founded in 1961 by Gordon "Grubby" Clark in Laguna Niguel, California, Clark Foam revolutionized the surfing industry by producing polyurethane foam blanks. These blanks provided a basic surfboard construction for shapers to refine into their own individual models, and the blanks themselves were actually designed for Clark by such legendary shapers as Dale Velzy and Dick Brewer. At one point before closing in 2005, it is estimated that Clark supplied about 90% of all surfboard blanks in the entire world.

In 1959, the Hawaiian Islands, offering everything from awe-inspiring volcanoes to soothing seas, was officially declared America’s 50th state. Surfing was interwoven in all aspects of Hawaiian’s lives from the connection to the sea to the community and love it provided among people. Hawaiians celebrated the ocean during luau with hula dances dedicated to giving thanks to the gifts the sea bestows. During the 1900s, Duke Kahanamoku became a symbol for Hawaii’s surf culture, as he reflected the Spirit of Aloha in his noble and respectful yet kind and welcoming actions. Beginning in the mid-1900s, Hawaiian beaches became the focal point of the Islands. Surf clubs like Waikiki Surf Club began offering lessons to tourists, beach bunnies tanned on the shores, and keiki splashed in the shoreline. To this day, Hawaii’s beaches tell the story of the Hawaiian culture, while continuing to keep the traditional Hawaiian values of community and the Spirit of Aloha alive today.

Originating in the 1920s in California and Hawaii, dog surfing has become a popular world-wide phenomenon, drawing in crowds eager to see dogs trained to surf on bodyboards and surfboards, either with a human or solo. On the Waves in Waikiki , a silent film released in the 1930s, showcases Phillip K. Auna and his terrier Night Hawk, who is able to hang ten while surfing with his owner. In the 1950s, a photograph of Joseph “Scooter Boy” Kaopuiki and Sandy, his dog, surfing in Hawaii was published in UPI and distributed throughout the United States. In 2006, at Imperial Beach in California, the first Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition was held and, today, continues to be the largest dog surfing competition in the U.S. When competing in canine surfing competitions, dogs are judged based on board size, dog’s confidence, and wave length and size. Competitors are able to register their dog in categories ranging from single or tandem surfing to dog size. Hawaii offers a host of dog friendly beaches from the beloved Waikiki Beach in Honolulu to Kailua Beach located near a dog-friendly mall to Kalapaki Beach, home to the popular Freddie’s Dog Park.
