As with many early air carriers, Western Airlines began in 1925 as a mail carrier service. Based in California, Western went through many stages over its sixty plus year existence. When it began serving as a commercial airline it initially focused on the Western United States. In 1969 it began offering service to Honolulu and Hilo with high end service which they called The Islander routes. During its prime in the 1970's and 1980's Western increased it's service to Hawaii and also offered flights to Kahului and Kona. In 1986 Western entered into a merger with Delta Airlines, and the Western Airlines name was retired.

With an estimated 2 million feral cats wandering the Hawaiian Islands, you are bound to meet a furry friend during your time in Hawaii. The Big Island is home to about half the feral cats, while Maui houses about 500,000, Oahu 300,000, and Kaua’i 15,000. Cats first arrived to the Hawaiian Islands around 1840 when European colonists landed with cats aboard their ships being used as natural rodent-control. Upon arriving at the Hawaiian Islands, the cats’ population flourished as they had no natural predators to regulate their population. Just like you are likely to see some free-range chickens clucking around, you will see some feral kitties purring and prowling the beaches of Hawaii.

It is believed that the traditional hula, Kahiko, has been part of the Hawaiian culture since ancient times. Today it is much more common to see the contemporary hula known as ‘Auana. King David Kalakaua, revered as the Merrie Monarch, had a profound love and appreciation for the hula dance. He said, “Hula is the language of the heart, and, therefore, the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people.” Everything that one does when hula dancing means something. The face, the hands, the feet, and the hips all look or move a certain way, each playing a part of the larger story

Hawai’i’s original beer is back! The tradition of brewing beer on the Islands began with Honolulu’s Don Francisco de Paula Marin all the way back in 1812. The tropical weather of the South Pacific combined with the laid back Aloha lifestyle made this cold, sudsy beverage the perfect refreshment for locals and watermen alike. In 1897 the Hawai’i Brewing Company introduced Primo Beer, which came to be known as “the Hawaiian beer” for much of the last century. Available again is the beer with the unique flavor and aroma that comes from a touch of raw Hawaiian cane sugar. Not only are locals and visitors excited, but we at Malibu Shirts are proud to carry Primo apparel and celebrate its long history.

Originating in the 1920s in California and Hawaii, dog surfing has become a popular world-wide phenomenon, drawing in crowds eager to see dogs trained to surf on bodyboards and surfboards, either with a human or solo. On the Waves in Waikiki , a silent film released in the 1930s, showcases Phillip K. Auna and his terrier Night Hawk, who is able to hang ten while surfing with his owner. In the 1950s, a photograph of Joseph “Scooter Boy” Kaopuiki and Sandy, his dog, surfing in Hawaii was published in UPI and distributed throughout the United States. In 2006, at Imperial Beach in California, the first Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition was held and, today, continues to be the largest dog surfing competition in the U.S. When competing in canine surfing competitions, dogs are judged based on board size, dog’s confidence, and wave length and size. Competitors are able to register their dog in categories ranging from single or tandem surfing to dog size. In the late 1950's, Waikiki Surf Club member Clarence Maki was inspired to create an organization for juniors to participate in surf contests. The "Surf Club Hawaii" was officially formed and offered its members monthly surfing and paddling contests, as well as an annual surfing championship held for the public. The contest held in 1961 was a rousing success, which signaled the start of 12 years if excitement for the young surfers of Hawaii. Originally established in 1968 and founded by shaper Dave Garner, Plastic Fantastic Surfboards began a history that would span five decades, over half a dozen owners, and factories in 3 states. The name Plastic Fantastic was inspired by the Jefferson Airplane song “Plastic Fantastic Lover.” The original home for Plastic Fantastic was in Haleiwa, Hawaii from 1968 to 1970, followed by two more years of production at a different location on the North Shore. At the same time, Garner and Danny Calohan would open shop in Huntington Beach, California, and the company would employ a stable of gifted shapers through the years, including Skip Frye, Jock Sutherland, Robert August, Bruce Jones, and Barry Kanaiaupuni. From 1968 to 2003 it is estimated that Plastic Fantastic produced approximately 55,000 surfboards.

Founded in 1961 by Gordon "Grubby" Clark in Laguna Niguel, California, Clark Foam revolutionized the surfing industry by producing polyurethane foam blanks. These blanks provided a basic surfboard construction for shapers to refine into their own individual models, and the blanks themselves were actually designed for Clark by such legendary shapers as Dale Velzy and Dick Brewer. At one point before closing in 2005, it is estimated that Clark supplied about 90% of all surfboard blanks in the entire world.

In 1959, the Hawaiian Islands, offering everything from awe-inspiring volcanoes to soothing seas, was officially declared America’s 50th state. Renowned for its soft ivory sands and warm relaxing waters that call to people throughout the world, Hawaii beckoned travelers to come experience and enjoy the unique Hawaiian culture the Islands continue to take pride in today. Surf culture resonates throughout Hawaii. Hawaii’s primary inhabitants, the Polynesians, began the practice of surfing, and the legendary Hawaiian surf culture was born. Surfing was interwoven in all aspects of Hawaiian’s lives from the connection to the sea to the community and love it provided among people. Hawaiians celebrated the ocean during luau with hula dances dedicated to giving thanks to the gifts the sea bestows. During the 1900s, Duke Kahanamoku became a symbol for Hawaii’s surf culture, as he reflected the Spirit of Aloha in his noble and respectful yet kind and welcoming actions. Beginning in the mid-1900s, Hawaiian beaches became the focal point of the Islands. Surf clubs like Waikiki Surf Club began offering lessons to tourists, beach bunnies tanned on the shores, and keiki splashed in the shoreline. To this day, Hawaii’s beaches tell the story of the Hawaiian culture, while continuing to keep the traditional Hawaiian values of community and the Spirit of Aloha alive today.
