The first person to write about Hawaii and surfing was British explorer Captain James Cook in 1778 after seeing Hawaiian wave-riders at the Big Island’s Kealakekua Bay. Cook’s stories of the wonders that he saw and the people that he encountered excited the entire continent of Europe. In many books, such as Polynesian Researches written by William Ellis in 1859, stories of Cook’s travels were brought to life in etchings, a drawing technique in which artists would use strong acid or mordant to cut into metal surfaces to create a design.
