100,000 plus fans cheered on the parade marching down Euclid Avenue, welcoming the National Air Races to Cleveland. In 1929, Cleveland Municipal which today is Cleveland-Hopkins International was finally hosting the National Air Races, a 10-day aviation event filled with thrilling races and crazy stunts. Event organizers constructed a permanent grandstand at the airport to seat 50,000 spectators, though that was not nearly enough for the massive gathered crowd. In fact, the event was so successful that Cleveland hosted the Air Races in 1931, ‘32, ‘34, ‘35, ‘37, ‘38, ‘39, ‘46, ‘47, ‘48, and ‘49! One of the most popular events was the Thompson Trophy Race where planes flew five laps around a 10-mile circuit.
