Larry was sitting in his lifeguard tower when he first noticed kids skateboarding on homemade boards in the parking lots that lined the beach. He decided to manufacture a quality skateboard and tie it to the best surf spot in Hawaii - Makaha Beach. Larry was also publisher of SurfGuide magazine, which ran the first skateboard ads, cartoons, and articles about the Makaha Team. The combination of the quality Makaha boards along with Larry’s promotion created skateboarding’s first wave, including appearances on the Steve Allen Show and the Art Linkletter Show.
