Founded in 1961 by Gordon "Grubby" Clark in Laguna Niguel, California, Clark Foam revolutionized the surfing industry by producing polyurethane foam blanks. These blanks provided a basic surfboard construction for shapers to refine into their own individual models, and the blanks themselves were actually designed for Clark by such legendary shapers as Dale Velzy and Dick Brewer. Opening its gates in 1959, the quarter-mile Fremont Dragstrip near San Francisco Bay was renowned for dragster automobile racing. After Southern Pacific Railroad attained this land post-World War II, the track was established adjacent to a popular gliderport known as Skyways Airport, thus contributing to the growing popularity of the Fremont Dragstrip as its occupants were drawn to the exhilarating high speed races and the deafening noise of not only the cars but the fans cheering. At the end of the 1960s and into the early 1970s, business was booming at the races as a multitude of radio ads sparked interest among pop radio station listeners in San Francisco Bay, beckoning them to the thrill of the competitions. Races fueled the economy in the surrounding area as thousands of fans were eager to witness world-record performances by Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, Connie Kalitta, and more. Many champions heralded the low humidity air from the San Francisco Bay that allowed them to acquire astounding speeds. Although the venue was renamed Baylands Raceway Park a few years prior to closing in 1988, it will always be revered as the infamous Fremont Dragstrip, drawing fans from all over the San Francisco Bay area.

In 1957 Half Moon Bay Airport became one of racing’s fastest, most attractive quarter-mile drag strips. Located just outside of San Francisco, Half Moon Bay Dragstrip, became the largest drag strip in Northern California offering bleachers, concession stands, a safety net, and a timing tower constructed from a bread van, to its many fans. Big name racers, including “Big Daddy” Don Garlits and Don “the Snake” Prudhomme, attracted enthusiasts from across the United States to witness the historical race in which Garlits pulled off an unexpected win though Prudhomme’s name had been etched into the trophy even before the race took place. Although racing stopped in 1969, the nostalgic memories of Sunday morning’s roaring engines, wild cheering, and buzz of adrenaline-fueled excitement live on in the tales of drag racing.

Founded in the mid 1980s by Frank Hawk, the National Skateboard Association made competition, once again, a priority for skaters. NSA was a proud host to many skate competitions during the 1980s to the 1990s, but as participation began to dwindle, the association was forced to shutdown. Around this time, various famous skaters made their mark in competition through one of the two most common skating styles of the time- freestyle and vert. Rodney Mullen, a freestyle champion, revived and perfected the kickflip, becoming one of the most notorious street skaters in skate history. Tony Hawk, son of Frank Hawk, prevailed in vert skating and became an internationally recognized, professional skater. Gathering at skateparks was a popular pastime among many Hawaiians as riding a skateboard was similar to riding a surfboard. Originating in 1977, Kona Skatepark continues to be the longest remaining private skatepark in the world with activities ranging from lessons to week long skate camps, and includes a snake run, vert ramp, street course, and numerous pools.

Rick Griffin was a highly gifted cartoonist and artist born in Palos Verdes, California in 1944.  Griffin was surfing by age 12 and developing his artistic skills by copying the cartoons in Mad magazine.  At the age of sixteen, Griffin met John Severson, who had just recently released the first issue of Surfer Magazine.  Severson saw the potential in Griffin's work and agreed to put Griffin's cartoon strip, "The Gremmies" in the next issue.  That cartoon was followed by a mop-haired, wide-grinned character called Murphy.  The beloved Murphy series ran in every issue of Surfer until late 1964, becoming somewhat of an unofficial mascot of the global surfing community.  Beyond cartooning, Rick Griffin is also known as one of the psychedelia art movement's pioneers, with some of his best known work coming on album covers such as The Grateful Dead (Aoxomoxoa), The Eagles (On the Border), Jackson Browne (Late for the Sky), and a popular album cover featuring a surfing eyeball on the Chris Darrow & Max Buda album (Eye of the Storm).  In several pieces of his work for The Grateful Dead, the surf themes from Griffin's youth can be seen merging with his counter culture art in the form of surfing skeletons and psychedelic waves.
