Founded in 1961 by Gordon "Grubby" Clark in Laguna Niguel, California, Clark Foam revolutionized the surfing industry by producing polyurethane foam blanks. These blanks provided a basic surfboard construction for shapers to refine into their own individual models, and the blanks themselves were actually designed for Clark by such legendary shapers as Dale Velzy and Dick Brewer. At one point before closing in 2005, it is estimated that Clark supplied about 90% of all surfboard blanks in the entire world.

Like many of the early fliers, American Airlines started as a conglomeration of smaller regional airlines whose primary business was delivering US Mail. After World War II, American expanded its passenger business, including transcontinental jet service and routes to Hawaii. By 1970 there was a direct flight from New York to Honolulu, offering many mainlanders their first chance to visit the beautiful Aloha State. A few years later in 1973, American became the first major airline to employ a female pilot. Throughout the years American Airlines has been a major innovator in aviation and helped spread Aloha around the globe.

Known as "The Hawk", Dale is a surfer, a celebrity, a hell raising rebel, a revolutionary retailer, a hall of fame surfer, a surf film financier, a lifeguard, and most of all, a shaper. A master shaper in his own right, Joe Quigg said, "You couldn't even sell a board in the sixties unless it looked like a Velzy board." Dale opened Velzy Surfboards (the world's first surf shop) in Manhattan Beach in 1949, and within years had shops all along Southern California's coast, and in Hawaii. Dale was so influential that a stretch of Hawaii's famous North Shore - now known as Velzyland - was named in his honor. In his 50 plus years of building boards for the best surfers the sport has ever known, Dale designed dozens of surfboards, each revolutionizing surfing in its own way.

Beechcraft was founded in 1932 by husband and wife team Walter and Olive Ann Beech in Wichita, Kansas. The Beech‘s along with designer Ted Wells began working out of an idle Cessna factory, developing the Model 17 Staggerwing. The Staggerwing would have a production run of over 750 planes, including 270 made for the United States Air Forces during WWII. Other popular models included the Model 18 and the revolutionary v-tailed Beechcraft Bonanza, which has been produced since 1947, giving it the longest production run of any airplane in history. The fourth Bonanza ever built, called the ‘Waikiki Beech‘ set a non-stop distance record in 1949, flying from Honolulu, Hawaii to Teterboro, New Jersey. Beechcraft was acquired by the Raytheon Company in 1980, and continued to change hands over the next few decades. Beechcraft is now owned by Textron who also controls several other aviation names such as Cessna and Bell Helicopter.

Street racing burned rubber through Los Angeles, California during the 1950s drawing fans of all ages with raucous noise and adrenaline thrills to this all-American sport. Opening its gates in October 1955, Lions Drag Strip welcomed 15,000 people to witness cars race in the Wilmington district of sunny L.A. The Lions Club International sponsored the beloved track, hosting a variety of races licensed by the American Hot Rod Association. After consistently holding races every Sunday for the next two years, Mickey Thompson, the strip manager, proposed Saturday night racing, leading to a rapid escalation of young fans in attendance. The drag strip thrived until 1972 when it was torn down to allow space for shipping cargo containers overseas. The memory of Lions Drag Strip cruises on today being honored through pop culture with comedians paying tribute to announcer Larry Huffman’s wired announcing style, in television series like The Munsters and MadMen , and Brad Pitt’s character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wearing a Lions Drag Strip t-shirt.

When you think of Hawaii, probably one of the last things you think of is race cars, but perhaps you should think twice about them. Roland "The Hawaiian" Leong is one of the legendary figures in racing, whose over 40-year career as a driver, owner and crew chief for funny cars and dragsters has made him one of the sport's greats. Eleven different drivers accounted for his 23 national event wins. In 2005, he was inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame and in 2006, he was Grand Marshal of the 15th Annual Hot Rod Reunion. Lockheed Martin‘s history is full of over a century of innovation and ingenuity in aviation. Back in 1912 in Los Angeles, California, Glenn L. Martin, was building his first aircraft in a rented church building, with the encouragement of Orville Wright. 400 miles North in San Francisco, brothers Allan and Malcolm Lockheed were developing seaplanes that would shatter records for distance and speed. Both companies would continue to evolve over the next 80 years consistently producing some of the finest aircraft in the world mostly for military use. This included the Stealth and Blackbird planes developed by Lockheed‘s secret Skunk Works division, and Martin creating everything from the P-38 Lightning plane to many of the rockets that helped propel the American space program. The two companies merged in 1995 forming Lockheed Martin as an aviation powerhouse. Today the company continues to develop a wide array of aircraft, aerospace, and defense products including the new F-35 Lightining, for which there is a flight simulator located at Pearl Harbor.

Opening its gates in 1959, the quarter-mile Fremont Dragstrip near San Francisco Bay was renowned for dragster automobile racing. After Southern Pacific Railroad attained this land post-World War II, the track was established adjacent to a popular gliderport known as Skyways Airport, thus contributing to the growing popularity of the Fremont Dragstrip as its occupants were drawn to the exhilarating high speed races and the deafening noise of not only the cars but the fans cheering. At the end of the 1960s and into the early 1970s, business was booming at the races as a multitude of radio ads sparked interest among pop radio station listeners in San Francisco Bay, beckoning them to the thrill of the competitions. Races fueled the economy in the surrounding area as thousands of fans were eager to witness world-record performances by Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, Connie Kalitta, and more. Many champions heralded the low humidity air from the San Francisco Bay that allowed them to acquire astounding speeds. Although the venue was renamed Baylands Raceway Park a few years prior to closing in 1988, it will always be revered as the infamous Fremont Dragstrip, drawing fans from all over the San Francisco Bay area.

Starting in 1927 with a vision, some single engine aircraft and a few trans-oceanic routes, Pan Am's emphasis on image and branding created the "jet-setter" lifestyle. On April 17, 1935, the S-42 Pioneer Clipper skimmed to the first ever landing in Hawaiian waters after a flight from Alameda, California that lasted 17 hours and 44 minutes. Surfer magazine called Makaha one of the “25 Best Waves in the World.” Hawaiian for “fierce,” Makaha is regarded in many circles as the home of big wave surfing, due in large part to the 30 foot wave that Greg “Da Bull” Noll caught in 1969. Until the advent of tow-in surfing, it was the largest wave ever ridden.
From 1954 to 1971, Makaha was home to the biggest surf competition of the day, the Makaha International Surfing Championships. Honolulu surfer and restaurant supplier John Lind created the winter contest, sponsored by the Waianae Lions Club and Waikiki Surf Club, to attract the world’s best surfers.

As with many early air carriers, Western Airlines began in 1925 as a mail carrier service. Based in California, Western went through many stages over its sixty plus year existence. When it began serving as a commercial airline it initially focused on the Western United States. In 1969 it began offering service to Honolulu and Hilo with high end service which they called The Islander routes. During its prime in the 1970's and 1980's Western increased it's service to Hawaii and also offered flights to Kahului and Kona. In 1986 Western entered into a merger with Delta Airlines, and the Western Airlines name was retired.

Maui is famous for its beauty and laid-back attitude, but the Valley Island also has a rich heritage in surfing. Its modern history can be traced back to the Ho'okipa Surfriders Club formed in 1935. The club held surfboard paddling races in Kahului Harbor on Kamehameha Day in 1939, and again in 1959 when surfing began a new revival. They renamed themselves Maui Surf Club and held the First Annual Lahaina Invitational Surfboard Paddling Races, dated June 11, 1960.
