Goats have been part of Hawaii’s story since 1778 arriving during Captain James Cook’s voyages. Seamlessly settling into the Big Island’s rugged mountains, lava fields and dry landscapes like they were made for it. Their resilience makes them a valuable source of milk, meat and hides and their ability to navigate even the toughest terrain helps their numbers flourish. By 1931 an estimated 75,000 goats roamed Hawaii Island. Today, feral goats remain a familiar sight across the island, a testament to their remarkable adaptability and their unexpected place in Hawaii’s history.
