Surfer magazine called Makaha one of the “25 Best Waves in the World.” Hawaiian for “fierce,” Makaha is regarded in many circles as the home of big wave surfing, due in large part to the 30 foot wave that Greg “Da Bull” Noll caught in 1969. Until the advent of tow-in surfing, it was the largest wave ever ridden. From 1954 to 1971, Makaha was home to the biggest surf competition of the day, the Makaha International Surfing Championships. Honolulu surfer and restaurant supplier John Lind created the winter contest, sponsored by the Waianae Lions Club and Waikiki Surf Club, to attract the world’s best surfers.

Academy award nominated director, Bruce Brown spent two years chasing summer around the world and capturing footage that set the standard for all future surf films. Surfers Michael Hynson and Robert August were lucky enough to get to search for the perfect wave off the coasts of Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti and Hawai'i. Screened to audiences in Southern California in 1964, and distributed world-wide in 1966, The Endless Summer would go onto generate over $30 million dollars at the box office, and take its rightful place as the king of surf videos.

The Kona Inn was built by the Inter-Island Steamship Navigation Company in 1928 as a means to expand the growing Hawaiian tourism market to the Kona area. Featuring a stunning setting on the coast, the Kona Inn was originally a 20 room hotel that featured a saltwater pool, tennis courts, and a cocktail lounge. At the time Kona was a highly remote destination and the Inn wasn't even able to have fresh water piped in until 1953. Still, the Kona Inn remained a popular destination for adventurous visitors, and in particular, fisherman. The Inn served as the unofficial headquarters for the billfish tournament as Kona developed a reputation as one of the premier marlin fishing areas in the world. The Kona Inn stopped housing guests in 1976, but still remains a popular destination, largely due to the lavishly refurbished, original restaurant (circa 1928) that reopened in 1979, offering unmatched sunset views and a premier dining experience.

Starting in 1927 with a vision, some single engine aircraft and a few trans-oceanic routes, Pan Am's emphasis on image and branding created the "jet-setter" lifestyle. On April 17, 1935, the S-42 Pioneer Clipper skimmed to the first ever landing in Hawaiian waters after a flight from Alameda, California that lasted 17 hours and 44 minutes. Offering luxury to both domestic and international travelers, Pan Am has left behind a legacy of comfort and sophistication that still resonates today.

Seeing an exotic pink South American bird strutting around Hawaii is unexpected, though you may be lucky enough to see one if you travel to Maui. The Westin Maui Resort & Spa and the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa are home to a flock of beautiful pink flamingos that live among the swans and koi fish in the hotels’ numerous tropical ponds. The Westin is located in Ka’anapali and the Hyatt is located in Lahaina. Although Hawaii maintains strict import and export regulations in order to protect and preserve the natural life on their islands, they allow the Westin and Hyatt to house flamingos. Flamingos are a primary attraction not only for the hotel guests but other tourists eager to catch a glimpse of the elegant flamingos living in the pristine ponds. It is a unique experience for any Hawaii traveler to say they stepped off the beach and walked among ponds with flowing waterfalls in which flamingos bathe and live alongside swans and koi fish.

Famed for its delicious baguettes and Eiffel Tower, France also boasts some of the world’s best surf, and is credited with the founding of the world-famous Biarritz Waikiki Surf Club. Côte de Basques Beach in Biarritz, known for its phenomenal surf, became the birthplace of Biarritz Waikiki Surf Club. Since France was not yet manufacturing surfboards during the 1950s, they imported boards from California and constructed and dispersed replicas during the summer of 1957. As young people yearning to ride waves began to repair broken or lost boards, the Tontons Surfers were born as France’s first surf club. On September 16, 1959, Waikiki Surf Club was established by revered surfers George Hennebutte, Michel Barland, Joel Rosnay, Carlos Dogny, Jacques Rott, and Peter Viertel. Soon enough the competitions extended up to include beaches along the Basque Coast and attracted attention from surfers globally. Throughout the 1960s and1970s, surfers were flocking to Biarritz hoping to catch the perfect wave. To this day, France continues to attract surfers from all over the world eager to test the waters of the revered Biarritz Waikiki Surf Club.

Trans World Airlines history dates all the way back to 1930 when they had the aviation pioneers like Charles Lindbergh and Jack Frye helping them build their brand as “The Airline Run by Flyers.” TWA was the chief rival to Pan American Airways for international travel, beginning in the 1940's. Their all-jet fleet was recognized all over the world and their trailblazing contributions to airport design helped revolutionize the industry. TWA went through multiple bankruptcies in the 1990's before merging with American Airlines in 2001.

In ancient Hawaii, the surf at Waikiki was second only to the Big Island’s Kona Coast. Today, when it comes to surf clubs, the Waikiki Surf Club is second to none. Originally, there was the exclusive Outrigger Canoe Club, which consisted mostly of mainland born haoles, and the Hui Nalu, whose membership included mainly native Hawaiians. In 1948 the best ideals of both clubs were realized in the Waikiki Surf Club.

As with many early air carriers, Western Airlines began in 1925 as a mail carrier service. Based in California, Western went through many stages over its sixty plus year existence. When it began serving as a commercial airline it initially focused on the Western United States. In 1969 it began offering service to Honolulu and Hilo with high end service which they called The Islander routes. During its prime in the 1970's and 1980's Western increased it's service to Hawaii and also offered flights to Kahului and Kona. In 1986 Western entered into a merger with Delta Airlines, and the Western Airlines name was retired.

With an estimated 2 million feral cats wandering the Hawaiian Islands, you are bound to meet a furry friend during your time in Hawaii. The Big Island is home to about half the feral cats, while Maui houses about 500,000, Oahu 300,000, and Kaua’i 15,000. Cats first arrived to the Hawaiian Islands around 1840 when European colonists landed with cats aboard their ships being used as natural rodent-control. Upon arriving at the Hawaiian Islands, the cats’ population flourished as they had no natural predators to regulate their population. Just like you are likely to see some free-range chickens clucking around, you will see some feral kitties purring and prowling the beaches of Hawaii.

Hawai’i’s original beer is back! The tradition of brewing beer on the Islands began with Honolulu’s Don Francisco de Paula Marin all the way back in 1812. The tropical weather of the South Pacific combined with the laid back Aloha lifestyle made this cold, sudsy beverage the perfect refreshment for locals and watermen alike. In 1897 the Hawai’i Brewing Company introduced Primo Beer, which came to be known as “the Hawaiian beer” for much of the last century. Available again is the beer with the unique flavor and aroma that comes from a touch of raw Hawaiian cane sugar. Not only are locals and visitors excited, but we at Malibu Shirts are proud to carry Primo apparel and celebrate its long history.
