The Kona Inn was built by the Inter-Island Steamship Navigation Company in 1928 as a means to expand the growing Hawaiian tourism market to the Kona area. Featuring a stunning setting on the coast, the Kona Inn was originally a 20 room hotel that featured a saltwater pool, tennis courts, and a cocktail lounge. At the time Kona was a highly remote destination and the Inn wasn't even able to have fresh water piped in until 1953. Still, the Kona Inn remained a popular destination for adventurous visitors, and in particular, fisherman. The Inn served as the unofficial headquarters for the billfish tournament as Kona developed a reputation as one of the premier marlin fishing areas in the world. The Kona Inn stopped housing guests in 1976, but still remains a popular destination, largely due to the lavishly refurbished, original restaurant (circa 1928) that reopened in 1979, offering unmatched sunset views and a premier dining experience.

Famed for its delicious baguettes and Eiffel Tower, France also boasts some of the world’s best surf, and is credited with the founding of the world-famous Biarritz Waikiki Surf Club. Côte de Basques Beach in Biarritz, known for its phenomenal surf, became the birthplace of Biarritz Waikiki Surf Club. Since France was not yet manufacturing surfboards during the 1950s, they imported boards from California and constructed and dispersed replicas during the summer of 1957. As young people yearning to ride waves began to repair broken or lost boards, the Tontons Surfers were born as France’s first surf club. On September 16, 1959, Waikiki Surf Club was established by revered surfers George Hennebutte, Michel Barland, Joel Rosnay, Carlos Dogny, Jacques Rott, and Peter Viertel. Soon enough the competitions extended up to include beaches along the Basque Coast and attracted attention from surfers globally. Throughout the 1960s and1970s, surfers were flocking to Biarritz hoping to catch the perfect wave. To this day, France continues to attract surfers from all over the world eager to test the waters of the revered Biarritz Waikiki Surf Club.

In ancient Hawaii, the surf at Waikiki was second only to the Big Island’s Kona Coast. Today, when it comes to surf clubs, the Waikiki Surf Club is second to none. Originally, there was the exclusive Outrigger Canoe Club, which consisted mostly of mainland born haoles, and the Hui Nalu, whose membership included mainly native Hawaiians. As with many early air carriers, Western Airlines began in 1925 as a mail carrier service. Based in California, Western went through many stages over its sixty plus year existence. When it began serving as a commercial airline it initially focused on the Western United States. In 1969 it began offering service to Honolulu and Hilo with high end service which they called The Islander routes. During its prime in the 1970's and 1980's Western increased it's service to Hawaii and also offered flights to Kahului and Kona. In 1986 Western entered into a merger with Delta Airlines, and the Western Airlines name was retired.
