The United States Surfing Association was formed in 1961 to improve the sport’s image as well as to govern surf competitions throughout the United States. USSA members, such as Corky Carroll, Mike Doyle, David Nuuhiwa and Joyce Hoffman, competed in world-class surf contests all across the globe. Issued jerseys displaying their call numbers, they were judged on a point system through various heats, with the top point-getter taking home the championship trophy. Following the 1967 season, the USSA split into four regional groups: the Western Surfing Association, the Eastern Surfing Association, the Hawaiian Surfing Association and the Gulf Coast Surfing Association. Winners of the 1967 United States Surfing Championship held in Huntington Beach, CA were Corky Carroll (men's), Joyce Hoffman (woman's) and Dru Harrison (juniors).

A little known fact is that Indiana was a major player in the origins and rise of drag racing. The world-famous U.S. 30 Dragstrip opened 1957 in Hobart, Indiana, though it is rumored to have been open as early as 1954. WEBCO is known as The First Name In Motocross. Beginning as a motorcycle parts company in the United States, WEBCO then used that technology to build their racing bikes, popular in both America and Europe. In 1927, Joseph Martin created what would become one of America’s most renowned fishing lures. Martin Fish Lure, based in Seattle, Washington, produced a wide variety of lures, such as fly rod poppers, pikes, and injured minnows. Martin Fish Lure was revered for its salmon plugs and quickly became the country’s largest producer. The company primarily focused on saltwater models, like the Model 77, Jetty Model, and the Atom look-alike. In 1961 Floyd Smith, a surfboard manufacturer based in San Diego, California, began printing his company logo on white shirts local surfers brought into Gordon & Smith Surfboards, and the surfer t-shirt was born. By the end of the year, the emerging market in silk-screen printing allowed printing of five-color O’Neill Surf Shop t-shirts and single-color Makaha International Surfing Championships t-shirts. The snowmobile brand was first manufactured in 1963 by Les Industries Bouchard and then purchased by Giffen in 1968. As with many early air carriers, Western Airlines began in 1925 as a mail carrier service. Based in California, Western went through many stages over its sixty plus year existence. When it began serving as a commercial airline it initially focused on the Western United States. In 1969 it began offering service to Honolulu and Hilo with high end service which they called The Islander routes. During its prime in the 1970's and 1980's Western increased it's service to Hawaii and also offered flights to Kahului and Kona. In 1986 Western entered into a merger with Delta Airlines, and the Western Airlines name was retired.

Maui is famous for its beauty and laid-back attitude, but the Valley Island also has a rich heritage in surfing. Its modern history can be traced back to the Ho'okipa Surfriders Club formed in 1935. The club held surfboard paddling races in Kahului Harbor on Kamehameha Day in 1939, and again in 1959 when surfing began a new revival.
