Originally established in 1968 and founded by shaper Dave Garner, Plastic Fantastic Surfboards began a history that would span five decades, over half a dozen owners, and factories in 3 states. The name Plastic Fantastic  was inspired by the Jefferson Airplane song “Plastic Fantastic Lover.”  The original home for Plastic Fantastic was in Haleiwa, Hawaii from 1968 to 1970, followed by two more years of production at a different location on the North Shore.  At the same time, Garner and Danny Calohan would open shop in Huntington Beach, California, and the company would employ a stable of gifted shapers through the years, including Skip Frye, Jock Sutherland, Robert August, Bruce Jones, and Barry Kanaiaupuni.  From 1968 to 2003 it is estimated that Plastic Fantastic produced approximately 55,000 surfboards.

In the mid 1950's Malibu was at the center of the surfing universe and a variety of surfboard manufacturers were popping up to fill the demand for quality surfboards.   Tom Flaherty was running a sailing and diving shop in Malibu at this time, and plunged into the fast growing market with boards he was personally shaping and glassing.  His craftsmanship quickly gained a following and Flaherty began employing guest shapers and glassers including names like Donald Takayama and Wayne Miyata.  The Flaherty continued to flourish in over the following decade with shops opening in Venice, Hollywood, the San Fernando Valley, and Waikiki Beach in Hawaii.  Flaherty was popular amongst serious surfers due to  his focus on designs that enhanced performance and also venturing in the use of new materials.  Flaherty was one of the first manufacturers to incorporate foam, allowing his boards to lose weight and gain maneuverability and speed.  Tom was also well known for producing some of the finest big wave guns of the era, capable of challenging the North Shore's most fierce waves.

The United States Surfing Association was formed in 1961 to improve the sport’s image as well as to govern surf competitions throughout the United States. USSA members, such as Corky Carroll, Mike Doyle, David Nuuhiwa and Joyce Hoffman, competed in world-class surf contests all across the globe. Issued jerseys displaying their call numbers, they were judged on a point system through various heats, with the top point-getter taking home the championship trophy. Edward Fletcher and Co. began manufacturing men’s and boy's wear in Australia in 1939 and continued to be a common apparel brand for many decades.  In 1972, the company saw an opportunity in the market to introduce a low cost, but well styled short which they called Stubbies.  That same year, Stubbies went on to sell over 750,000 pairs, and by 1978 these shorts were so successful that the company officially changed its name to Stubbies Clothing Co.  In the late 1970’s and into the 1980’s Stubbies sponsored a series of trial events in California, Hawaii and Florida to help contestants to qualify for the Stubbies Surf Classic.  If you’re wondering about the name, legend says they were trying to come up with a name for the shorts and a tired salesmen got up and said, “This is thirsty work, I’m going out for a stubbie [of beer].”  The name stuck.

A kaleidoscope snorkeling experience is located in the ancient volcanic cinder cone about 3 miles off Maui’s south shore- Molokini. Back in 1967, Mike Turkington and Mike Hobak opened the North Shore's second surf shop, Country Surfboards, located in the old 1935 M. Yoshida building in Haleiwa. Opened in 1958, Hawaii Country Club is located in the “Kunia district” among the majestic pineapple fields at the foot of the Waianae Mountain Range. While many new golf courses were built on defunct sugar can plantations, Hawaii Country Club was not. It preserves the natural topography of the land and captures the atmosphere of the good-old-days of Hawaii. On clear days, there are magnificent views of Pearl Harbor and Diamond head, and if you stay into the evening, you can see the beautiful city lights of Honolulu.

Originally founded in 1946 under the name Trans-Pacific Airlines, Aloha Airlines was launched by Ruddy F Tongg, Sr. with the concept of having an airline to connect California, Hawaii and China.  In its earlier years the company was focused primarily on inter-island flights in Hawaii and its service quickly led to the airline earning the nickname "The Aloha Airline", a name which was incorporated into the official name TPA-The Aloha Airline in 1950.  In 1958, the company dropped the TPA portion of its name and would move into the future under the Aloha Airlines name.  During the late 50's and into the 60's, Aloha Airlines would remain near the front of the rapidly evolving industry technologies.  They were the second airline in the United States to move completely to a strictly turbine operated fleet.  By 1966 they were already making the push into an all-jet fleet that would eventually feature Boeing 737-200 jets that were fondly nicknamed "Funbirds".  Aloha would continue to offer inter-island service as well as flights to the US Mainland until it eventually ceased operation in 2008.  Although Aloha Airlines no longer operates it played a significant role in Hawaii's aviation history and opened up access to Hawaii's islands to generations of passengers.

It is believed that the traditional hula, Kahiko, has been part of the Hawaiian culture since ancient times. Today it is much more common to see the contemporary hula known as ‘Auana. King David Kalakaua, revered as the Merrie Monarch, had a profound love and appreciation for the hula dance. Surfer magazine called Makaha one of the “25 Best Waves in the World.” Hawaiian for “fierce,” Makaha is regarded in many circles as the home of big wave surfing, due in large part to the 30 foot wave that Greg “Da Bull” Noll caught in 1969. Until the advent of tow-in surfing, it was the largest wave ever ridden.

From 1954 to 1971, Makaha was home to the biggest surf competition of the day, the Makaha International Surfing Championships. Honolulu surfer and restaurant supplier John Lind created the winter contest, sponsored by the Waianae Lions Club and Waikiki Surf Club, to attract the world’s best surfers.
