Clyde Cessna built and flew his first airplane in 1911, just 8 years after the Wright Brothers first took to the skies.  He would continue to work on wood and fabric aircraft in the following years until founding the Cessna-Roos Aircraft Company along with Victor Roos in 1927 in Wichita, Kansas.  Roos resigned after just one month with Cessna buying back his interest and beginning work on the Cessna DC-6.  The original Cessna brand was short lived with the Great Depression forcing it to shut down in 1932.  In 1934, Dwight and Dwayne Wallace took over the Cessna name and began establishing Cessna as one of the premier small aircraft companies in the world.  Although they did build some planes for Military use in WWII, Cessna quickly returned to commercial production in 1948, focusing on all-metal aircraft made from production parts, rather than the hand-built process.  In the following decades Cessna would introduce airplanes, such as the Cessna CH-1 and 172.  They would also develop a helicopter in 1955, and introduce their first jet in 1969.  Cessna continues to make  commercial airplanes, personal aircraft, and business class jets.  And, if you happen to fly Mokulele Airlines from one island to another in Hawaii, there is a good chance you'll be flying in a Cessna Caravan.

Surfer magazine called Makaha one of the “25 Best Waves in the World.” Hawaiian for “fierce,” Makaha is regarded in many circles as the home of big wave surfing, due in large part to the 30 foot wave that Greg “Da Bull” Noll caught in 1969. The beloved animated character Gumby was first created in the early 1950s by Art Clokey, who had been developing his clay animation techniques at the University of Southern California. In 1955, Clokey created a pilot featuring Gumby, which was immediately picked up by executives at NBC, who featured a Gumby short called ”Gumby on the Moon” on the Howdy Doody show in 1956. Gumby became an instant hit, and in 1957, Gumby had his own show that ran through the ‘50s and ‘60s. The Malibu Surf Club was founded in 1952 by a small but dedicated group of surfers that included such well-known members as Matt Kivlin, Les Williams, Joe and Aggie Quigg, Nina "Honeybear" Warren, and rat pack original - Peter Lawford. Kivlin designed the original lettering for the club logo which first appeared on a classic surf sweater with the sewn-on hood.

Trans World Airlines history dates all the way back to 1930 when they had the aviation pioneers like Charles Lindbergh and Jack Frye helping them build their brand as “The Airline Run by Flyers.” TWA was the chief rival to Pan American Airways for international travel, beginning in the 1940's. TWA went through multiple bankruptcies in the 1990's before merging with American Airlines in 2001.

The Strong Current Surf Shop has been a staple on the North Shore since 1989.  The shop was founded by the husband-and-wife team of Johnny and Bonnie Moore, who left New Jersey for a slice of Hawaiian heaven.  Originally the shop sold surfboards, surfboard accessories and apparel, but it quickly became evident that their apparel, which they were screen printing upstairs from their shop, was the big draw.  In 1993 the shop also became the home for the Hale'iwa Surf Museum.  A surf museum in an apparel store, what a crazy idea, right?

As with many early air carriers, Western Airlines began in 1925 as a mail carrier service.  Based in California, Western went through many stages over its sixty plus year existence.  When it began serving as a commercial airline it initially focused on the Western United States.  In 1969 it began offering service to Honolulu and Hilo with high end service which they called The Islander routes.  During its prime in the 1970's and 1980's Western increased it's service to Hawaii and also offered flights to Kahului and Kona.  In 1986 Western entered into a merger with Delta Airlines, and the Western Airlines name was retired.

As the name suggests, Hawaii Country Club is in fact the oldest public golf course on the island of Oahu. Opened in 1958, Hawaii Country Club is located in the “Kunia district” among the majestic pineapple fields at the foot of the Waianae Mountain Range. While many new golf courses were built on defunct sugar can plantations, Hawaii Country Club was not. The Kona Inn was built by the Inter-Island Steamship Navigation Company in 1928 as a means to expand the growing Hawaiian tourism market to the Kona area.  Featuring a stunning setting on the coast, the Kona Inn  was originally a 20 room hotel that featured a saltwater pool, tennis courts, and a cocktail lounge.  At the time Kona was a highly remote destination and the Inn wasn't even able to have fresh water piped in until 1953.  Still, the Kona Inn remained a popular destination for adventurous visitors, and in particular, fisherman.  The Inn served as the unofficial headquarters for the billfish tournament as Kona developed a reputation as one of the premier marlin fishing areas in the world.  The Kona Inn stopped housing guests in 1976, but still remains a popular destination, largely due to the restaurant that opened in 1979 offering unmatched sunset views, and a premier dining experience.
