Hui Nalu, the “Club of the ‘Waves”, was founded in 1905 by Duke Kahanamoku, Knute Cottrell and Ken Winter but was not chartered until 1911. Based at the Moana Hotel in Waikiki, swimming was the primary activity of the club in the early years but club members also enjoyed surfing, canoe paddling and kanikapila (impromptu jam music.) Members, many of whom were beachboys such as Rabbit Kekai, would convene underneath a hau tree on Waikiki Beach. Hui Nalu still exists today and their stated mission is to provide educational opportunities for individuals, families and the community revolving around ocean activities.
