Widely regarded as the most memorable of the world championships, the ISF/USSA committee scoured the entire coast of the Western U.S. in search of the best site for the 1966 championships. In the end, it was decided that San Diego offered the best breaks in which to test the worlds best surfers. Between September 26 and October 2, over 40,000 spectators, ABC’s “Wide World of Sports”, correspondents from the New York Times, Newsweek, and Life descended upon Southern California to witness the 3rd annual contest.  Judged in three separate categories (reef, point and beach breaks), with a cumulative point score determining the best, Australia’s Robert “Nat” Young defeated the likes of David Nuuhiwa and Corky Carroll to win the Men’s Division, while the United States’ Joyce Hoffman took the title in the Women’s Division.
