Competitive rowing has been a staple in Hawaiian culture since the early 1870‘s.  With a quick growth in popularity, rowing clubs would begin to pop up in the 1880‘s with the first organized group being the Myrtle Rowing Club, which was founded by M.D. Monsarrat.  Among the many fine athletes and socialites that held membership at the club was King David Kalakaua, who frequently participated in races and social activities with his fellow club members.  Rowing continues to be a sporting presence on The Islands with many collegiate, club, and competitive teams practicing on the Ala Wai canal and in the harbors and open waters surrounding the various islands.
