The novel Gidget, the Little Girl with Big Ideas was published in 1957, featuring the adventures of a teenage girl learning to surf and befriending the colorful characters found at Malibu Beach.  The movie rights were sold to Columbia Pictures shortly after and the first Gidget film was released in 1959 starring Sandra Dee.  A second film, Gidget Goes Hawaiian followed the widely popular original film in 1961.  In total the Gidget collection would include 8 books, 3 feature films, a television series and several telemovies.  The Gidget phenomenon sent waves through the emerging surf scene of the late 1950's and much of the 60's, bringing not only the sport, but the beach lifestyle to the forefront of American Culture.
